Studying Abroad Makes You a Better Student
It is the intangible things that make us better. Not necessarily those things written in a textbook waiting to be regurgitated on the next exam, but a collective experience that stretches the human mind, and allows us to truly grow.
The GLOSSARI project, a study of nearly 20,000 students in the The University of Georgia system over the last decade, found that students who participated in study abroad programs did better in school after they returned to their home campuses.
According to the study's results, as reported by Inside Higher Ed, study abroad participants' four-year graduation rate was nearly 50 percent as compared to roughly 42 percent for non-participants. (Six-year graduation rates were almost 90 percent for study abroad students, whereas those who didn't travel were closer to 83 percent.)
In particular, studying abroad seemed to give an academic boost to students whose came into college as lower performing. These students are often discouraged from traveling outside the U.S. for study:
Researchers found a particularly pronounced effect of study abroad on academic performance among students who entered college with the lowest SAT scores. Among students who entered college with a combined SAT score of 800 (on the verbal and math sections), those who studied abroad ended up with a GPA of 3.21 compared to 3.14 for those students who stayed stateside.
This study just makes me feel even worse about not taking advantage of my school's study abroad options. Did anyone out there who did study abroad notice that they were more dedicated to their school work once they returned from abroad? What might contribute to these students becoming better students?

Did you have a college in mind and want to increase your chances of acceptance? Check out these two tips for getting into college
You think you found your perfect school. It has the best student scene for you, great programs in your major and a great location. And you just have to get in. But how? Here are six secret tips for getting into your dream school.
Double check your dream
Before you go all out to get into a school, be absolutely sure it’s the right one for you.
“The problem with ‘dream schools’ is not that they are obtainable only in a dream, but that too often, students dream of them for the wrong reasons,” says DJ Capobianco, a sophomore communications and business administration major at Boston University. “It is far too easy to choose a dream school based on the values and priorities of others. The real secret tip for getting into your dream school is picking one that you would actually be happy at.”
Hilary Goetz knew that Cornell University was right for her when she saw it. But it took a little bit of research to realize that she wanted to focus on the School of Human Ecology.
“I’m a policy analysis and management major, which is a much more minute major and changed the way my application worked,” she says.
Write a touching essay
You have the application in your hands (that is, if you’re going the old-school paper route). Rather than quaking at it, see it as your opportunity to shine.
Capobianco says the essay is the most crucial part.
“Students need to, very cautiously and carefully, tell their dream schools how they feel. The caution is absolutely necessary: No college wants to be overly drooled upon. Instead, extend admissions counselors the luxury of reading an application that is specially crafted for them. Write an essay that discusses the difference you will make on their campus.”

As cliché as it sounds, by studying abroad you will become a much worldlier person, and become more marketable to schools because of the intangible life skills you’re going to pick up along the way. Think of it as gaining a sort of cultural capital. The fact that you’ve studied abroad will answer many people’s questions about what type of person you are even before they have to ask.
You want culture? Perhaps one of the best ways to experience culture is to live it, which is exactly what you’ll be doing as a study abroad student. Aside from gaining an understanding for cultures other than your own, you will also gain intangible skills (another great selling point for Mom and Dad). Independence, time management, organization, social skills and self-confidence, just to name a few, will all develop exponentially while you’re abroad.

10 ways to make your college applications stand out
Make an impression that will get them to say yes!
Everyone knows a student who sees college application deadlines approaching and immediately joins every club that he or she can fit into a day. Rather than suddenly spreading yourself too thin, send stronger applications and increase your overall acceptance rate by making your applications more personal, more unique and more specific to each school you are applying to. In order to catch the eye of the admissions office, you need be creative. Here’s how:
1. Make your essays vivid
Judith Hodara was the associate director of admissions for the University of Pennsylvania (www.upenn.edu) and the director of admissions for the Wharton School of Business, who now coaches high school students and MBA hopefuls through the application process. She says, “Students should really capture a moment in their lives; a chess tournament when they have their hand on a pawn and are going to move it, getting out the door when the volunteer fire department alarm goes off, or the shock of cold water when they hit the pool for swim practice. All very small instances, but they give the reader a real idea of who the student is.”
