Honoring Edgar Morin (1921–2026)
Earth Charter International pays tribute to Edgar Morin, French philosopher, sociologist, and pioneering thinker of complexity, who passed away last Friday.
His landmark work, Seven Complex Lessons in Education for the Future, commissioned by UNESCO, remains one of the most influential educational visions of our time. It argues that education must prepare people not only with knowledge and skills, but with the capacity to understand complexity, confront uncertainty, and recognize our shared human destiny.
His emphasis on interconnectedness, planetary consciousness, and ethical responsibility has shaped ECI's educational philosophy for over two decades and resonates deeply with Earth Charter pedagogy.
Morin leaves us a profound legacy: the invitation to think more deeply, connect more widely, and act with greater wisdom and compassion for the Earth and all its inhabitants.

ECI celebrates the UNGA resolution adopted yesterday, which welcomes and supports the decision issued last year by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on states’ obligations regarding climate change.
The resolution, introduced by Vanuatu as a draft in February, strengthens global efforts toward climate justice and accountability, and opens pathways for operationalizing these decisions, including advancing the transition away from fossil fuels.
We congratulate the many individuals, organizations, and movements whose advocacy and leadership made this possible, including especially Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change, World's Youth for Climate Justice (WYCJ), World Future Council, and many others for their extraordinary work in laying the groundwork for this achievement.

🌍 The path to an Ecological Civilization runs through education, values, and shared responsibility.
The newly released “Handbook of Ecological Civilization: Concept, Philosophy, and Pedagogy” edited by Michael A. Peters, Benjamin J. Green, Greg William Misiaszek, and Xudong Zhu, brings together 79 chapters from international scholars to explore one of the most pressing challenges of our time: how do we build a civilization that truly lives in harmony with the Earth?
Several chapters are deeply rooted in Earth Charter principles, examining how the Earth Charter serves as a pedagogical framework, a beacon for youth, and a foundation for reimagining higher education. Contributors from Costa Rica, Colombia, Brazil, Uganda, South Africa, Spain, Canada, and Kenya all bring their voices to this global conversation.
As Earth Charter International Executive Director Mirian Vilela writes in the Foreword, this handbook offers rich ideas and recommendations toward what may be the most important legacy our generation can leave: putting humanity on the path of an Ecological Civilization.
