Why the United Nations Still Matters in a Fragmented World

The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly opened this week, under the theme "Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation." As leaders gather once again, a familiar question resurfaces: can multilateralism still deliver in a world of shifting alliances?
No single institution can resolve climate change, pandemics, or conflict on its own, and the United Nations is no exception. Yet the more meaningful question may not be whether the UN is imperfect. It is whether the world can afford to abandon the space where 193 states still gather to negotiate, coordinate, and hold one another accountable.

Por qué las Naciones Unidas siguen importando en un mundo fragmentado

El 81.º período de sesiones de la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas se inauguró esta semana bajo el tema «Restaurar la confianza, gestionar la transformación». Mientras las y los líderes vuelven a reunirse, resurge una pregunta conocida: ¿puede el multilateralismo seguir dando resultados en un mundo de alianzas cambiantes?
El cambio climático, las pandemias y los conflictos exceden la capacidad de cualquier institución por sí sola, y las Naciones Unidas no son la excepción. Sin embargo, la pregunta de fondo quizá no sea si las Naciones Unidas son imperfectas. Es si el mundo puede permitirse abandonar el espacio donde 193 Estados todavía se reúnen para negociar, coordinar y pedirse cuentas mutuamente.
