"They're not the wealthy Western countries you’d expect to see, or even the progressive Nordic ones that normally bag the lifestyle laurels. Instead, a list of the top 10 (the index ranks 140 countries overall) shows that when it comes to people’s ability to live good lives within sustainable limits, Latin American and Asia Pacific countries are ahead of the crowd." “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” — Mahatma Gandhi

The last couple of weeks were, without a doubt, a determining experience for our Spring 2016 students. Here you can see some of the moments captured in Bajo Loaiza, a beautiful community that we'll keep close to our hearts.

From Sunday, February 28th through Thursday, March 10th, our group of 16 students worked towards improving the school, the community center and the sorroundings of Bajo Loaiza, a town located in Mora, San José.

The work was hard and everyday's temperature made it even harder, but the affection and care of every single person (and pet) around us made it almost impossible to leave.

It was an important experience not only to help others and give back but for personal growth as well!

Today was our last day of work during SL abroad. Kim North, a communications student, wrote about what's been this experience for her.

“Bajo Loiza may not be on the list of top places to visit in Costa Rica but it is my favorite place in the country. Our time here in Bajo Loiza is coming to an end. It has been an incredible experience.

I know the whole time we have been here I have put in a lot of work, effort, and energy into every project I was assigned. As I looked around every day I saw that my classmates were doing the same. Some days we had easier tasks like painting tires and other days we were moving the earth and mixing cement. It wasn't always easy but we were always able to have fun doing our assigned tasks.

I think this community taught me that no matter what you are doing that it is important to do your best and be happy doing it. The community members are so happy here with what they have. The kids who I saw here were so happy when we would play cards or soccer with them. It was amazing to me that every little thing we did here made such an impact on people.

Now that our time here is wrapping up, I can see and feel that we have made a difference on this beautiful community. I'm glad that our hard work has payed off and will last for a long time. I know that some days when we worked we were all exhausted and even a little frustrated. But as a group, we always found a way to keep working and to stay positive. Whether it was by joking around or singing along with songs, we found ways to keep going. I'm glad we all worked as hard as we did because our work definitely helped this deserving community.

Once we leave I know I will my host family and all of the kids in the community. The kindness and willingness to open up and let us be a part of their lives was incredible. I will miss everyones positive outlook on life and when I'm back in San Isidro and even back in the United States I hope to remember to be as positive as they are here.”
