Why a black hole’s repeat flares keep fading: the answer was the star’s spin all along

When a star strays close to a supermassive black hole but isn't destroyed outright, it can survive to make repeated passes, flaring each time it swings by....

https://skycr.org/2026/08/21/stellar-spin-repeating-tidal-disruption-flares/

A team at Syracuse University led by Ananya Bandopadhyay has solved a two-year puzzle: why the repeating flares from partial tidal disruption events grow progressively dimmer. The answer is the star's spin — a star already rotating rapidly before its first pass produces the observed fading. That r...

ALMA finds sulfur around a rare dying supergiant — and a chemical fingerprint once thought unique to Earth’s rocks

Astronomers have uncovered a chemically rich shroud of sulfur-bearing molecules around the rare massive star HD 87643, including the first ever detection of sulfur monoxide and sulfur dioxide around a B[e] supergiant....

https://skycr.org/2026/08/20/alma-sulfur-be-supergiant-hd-87643/

Using ALMA's Atacama Compact Array, a team led by Cristobal Bordiu (INAF Catania) has detected sulfur-bearing molecules around the rare massive star HD 87643 — the first sulfur chemistry ever found around a B[e] supergiant, expanding its known molecular inventory from one molecule to ten. An anoma...

Here is the certificate naming me a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society (FRAS). It arrived in Costa Rica just a few days ago, months after my election on 13 March 2026 — a story that made the national news at the time.

The Royal Astronomical Society, founded in London in 1820, stands among the most respected scientific societies in the world.

My thanks to everyone who follows SKYCR and shares the night sky with me at every telescopiada.

Milky Way’s fastest star orbits our supermassive black hole so closely it feels its spin

Astronomers using ESO's Very Large Telescope Interferometer have discovered S301, the fastest known star in the Milky Way, orbiting the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* at 25,000 km/s — over 8% of the speed of light — and completing an orbit in just 8.7 years. Published in Nature by the GRAVITY+ collaboration, the star passes close enough to feel the black hole dragging spacetime, making it the first star that could directly measure a supermassive black hole's spin — a key test of Einstein's general relativity....
