We recently said goodbye to our group of students from Washington and Lee University (April & May 2025). The students had a great and unforgettable experience while in Nicoya and during their Study Abroad Program. We hope to have another group soon! Pura Vida!

DESDE & DE
The Spanish preposition DESDE (from/since)
Firstly, desde is used to indicate the origin of an action in a sentence where the destination or end is not expressed (it is implicit).
More precisely, desde indicates when or where an ongoing action has started. For instance:
-Estoy esperando su llamada desde las 8:00AM. (I have been waiting for her call since 8:00AM)
-Vivo en Costa Rica desde marzo.
(I have been living in Costa Rica since March)
-Mario ha llegado en coche desde Panamá.
(Mario has arrived from Panama by car)

The Spanish preposition DE (from)
The preposition DE has several meanings. It can express possession, cause, material, contents, etc.
When it expresses time, it can easily confuse with DESDE.
So, we have to keep in mind that we must use DE (and not DESDE) to:
– Express the origin. The place where someone or something comes from.
El tequila es de México. (Tequila is from Mexico)
Soy de Argentina. (I am from Argentina)
Vengo de Chile. (I come from Chile)

– When expressing space, it is always used with the Spanish verb VENIR. We use it to answer the question “From where?” / “¿De dónde…?”
– ¿De dónde vienes? (Where are you coming from?)
– Vengo del gimnasio. (I am coming from the gym)

Adverbs of Frequency
Adverbs of frequency express how often the action of a verb occurs:
a menudo (often)
a veces (sometimes)
de nuevo (again)
de vez en cuando (occasionally)
frecuentemente (frequently)
jamás (never)
nunca (never)
raramente (rarely)
siempre (always)
usualmente (usually)

Por ejemplo:
-Siempre estoy cansado. (I’m always tired)
-A veces cena conmigo. (Sometimes he eats dinner with me)
-Nunca pagan. (They never pay)

CLASE DEL MES:

CONDICIONAL HIPOTETICO, DE MODESTIA O CORTESIA
El condicional es hipotético, de modestia o de cortesía. En estos casos expresa en realidad tiempo presente; el presente y el perfecto de subjuntivo tienen sus valores normales. Ejemplos:
(1) Querría (me gustaría) que estés aquí antes de las 12.
(2) Sería bueno que no te pongas más esa chaqueta.
(3) Yo no diría que Adolfo sea el más guapo.
(4) Haz lo que quieras, pero me parecería mejor que te quedes en casa.
(5) (Si pudiera) Te ordenaría que no te muevas de aquí.
(6) Yo lo haría, si fuese necesario, para que te quedes tranquilo.
(7) Sería una vergüenza que haya dejado a la familia en la miseria.
(8) Francamente, preferiría que no te hayas mojado los pantalones.
(9) Nadie creería que haya estado enfermo todo este tiempo.
(10) Podría ser que César haya llegado ya.
En todos estos casos es posible usar imperfecto o pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo en el verbo subordinado, de acuerdo con la regla general, pero el hablante ha usado presente para marcar más explícitamente que se trata de acciones presentes (3), o futuras (1), (2), (4), (5), (6), con respecto al momento en que se habla; y ha usado pretérito perfecto para señalar con toda nitidez y claridad que la acción ha terminado recientemente [o que, en realidad, el hablante no sabe si de hecho la acción se ha llegado a producir o no; véanse, en este sentido, los casos (7) y (8), por ejemplo].
