So happy to share a new species record for our site: MacConnell’s Bat (Mesophylla macconnelli). It is the only species within the genus Mesophylla. Super cute, and tiny bat species! Remember, bats need friends!

We are thrilled to announce a new species record! For the very first time, Caracciolo's Stripe-faced Bat (Vampyrodes caraccioli). According to IUCN, its population trend is unknown. Food production and high biodiversity is possible!

The bicolor is back! We recorded Micronycteris tresamici (minuta), the Northern Big-eared Bat, for the second time. It belongs to a group of bats that are difficult to identify (tresamici vs minuta). According to Siles and Baker (2019), there are two possibilities:

a) both species are sympatric in Central America, or b) they are allopatric, with M. tresamici distributed from Guatemala to Costa Rica and M. minuta from Panama to southern Brazil.

He did it again! Since 2022, the Velvety Fruit-eating Bat [Enchistenes hartii] has only visited us in June/July. This year we recorded it on July 31st, and it had Güitite [Wild tree to***co, Acnistus arborescens] seeds on its fur. Thanks for providing food and habitat for this and many other bat species!

Long-term monitoring is essential to understand spatial and temporal patterns of animal movements. For the last three years at our research site Chocolate Tour we have recorded the beautiful Velvety Fruit-eating Bat (Enchistenes hartii) only in late June-early July (June 29th, 2022, July 28th, 2023, and July 4th, 2024). The day before, July 3rd tour guide Roy Soto found one specimen at El Silencio Preserve. This is considered a rare species and these records may suggest altitudinal movements, a topic we will develop in future posts. So happy!
