Morning at Rara Avis in Costa Rica on our last production trip. This place has so many great stories to tell.

Surveying a river for snakes, frogs, turtles, etc. is hard work. Researchers like Twan Leenders and Alex Shepack are used to spending night after night hunting for their subjects. Twan says, "I love going out at night because you just look so much more intently. It’s like a treasure hunt every night… you never know what you’re going to find.”
This is a Central American Screech Owl. “They are very good at doing one thing: that’s hunting. It’s really their hearing that is their impressive trait... their hearing is so well-triangulated that it’s almost like a sonar image.” ~

"Here we are hiking through one of the most magical spots in Rara Avis Rainforest Reserve, a remote stream filled with Elephant Ear (Xanthosoma sp.) plants while deploying a series of wildlife cameras for mammal monitoring." ~ Twan Leenders, president of Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History.
Happy Friday and cheers to an exciting week for Humble Mountain. We’re looking forward to sharing many stories with you about this stretch of forest called Rara Avis!

Here we see Twan Leenders, students, and Caitlin Gunner shortly after catching a Brown Forest Turtle. By surveying reptiles and amphibians in this part of Costa Rica year after year researchers get a clearer picture of the state of these populations.
