What a wonderful gift to Arenal's. Future leaders. Starts with the little ones. My daughter Kathy tried to dedicate her life to child education so I will not only donate in her memory as her ashes are back in our beautiful forest/river area close by but I also had 42 credits in Special Education after majoring in Psychology as I know that education gives not only knowledge but self respect. Thank you BETTYE and all those who have been helping with this wonderful project. I am so proud of this community offering ...will do my share when possible. Kudos, Cathy Nicholas

KLC's 2020 Season is going great. We've enrolled 50 kids and so far they've had 198 hours of English learning thanks to the help of our Volunteers who collectively have given 60 hours of their time to this wonderful cause. Today, we focused on parts of the body using Mr. Potato Head. We also reviewed our weather words and so much more. Another beautiful day for English learning in Nuevo Arenal!

28/02/2020

Today we enjoyed the beautiful weather practicing action words like walk, run and jump and prepositions like up, down, over and under while playing with a colorful parachute. We also focused on writing our names and learning the difference between different writing tools like pencils, crayons and markers. We had a relay to identify colors and played Bingo to practice recognizing letters. See everyone next week!

The kids created beautiful Birthday cards for Bettye today. Of course they also sang Happy Birthday too.

Another fun day at KLC...Welcome 15 kids 5 Volunteers. Our craft was Zentangle. We added interest with a variety of shapes and colors to an ordinary image. We focused on shapes and colors and creativity most of all. Numbers practice with Mr. Ed leading Bingo. STEM focus with our Magnet Wall...placing rails to make to toys roll just right and into the bin. Mr. Edd led the class in their favorite sing-alongs to wrap up the session. See everyone Thursday for more fun and learning.

It’s great to welcome back the children of the Nuevo Arenal Community. Today with the help of our volunteers (some new and some more experienced), we focused on Valentines Day crafts. We used scissors, hole punches and markers and yarn to create these beautiful crafts. All the while we practiced our English using sentences to complete the activities.

The making of a mummy for today’s Halloween festivities...great work Rhea and Juan!

25/10/2019

Spiders, Spider Webs, Spider-Man and the Halloween theme continues. Today we made cute spiders from egg cartons. Gracias Jacqueline (Mochi) for the idea! We practiced saying our names (“my name is...”) and asking others (“what’s your name?) while tossing a skein of black yarn. When everyone told us their name, we created a large web. Then we placed our spiders 🕷 🕷 🕷 into the web. Later we practiced our prepositions to describe the location of our spiders...under, inside, on top of, beside, next to, etc. The Halloween excitement continues! See you next week!

KLC offers an English Learning program and because of the program’s Director Bettye Cobb, we share customs from her homeland ... the United States.

In October, we’ve been combining our lessons with crafts related to Halloween.

Here are a few Monster crafts that we used with our “body parts” curriculum. These monsters had a few extra or a few less parts than we do.

Shout out to Jacqueline and Edd for a job well done today! 30 kids and 3 volunteers and 2 very helpful ladies. Muchisimas Gracias a todos!

Our Halloween theme continued this week. Focusing on using recycled products, we used toilet tissue rolls to make these adorable bats and colorful monsters in our Tuesday class. Today, we made black cats and then we read the book about The Wheels on The Bus with Peter the Black Cat. The children got to practice following directions, tracing, cutting and gluing their crafts. We also had fun playing Pictionary (a drawing game to practice vocabulary) and a cool color game too. See you next Tuesday for more Halloween fun!

Today at KLC the kids had a table set up for, "Can you find" or "I Spy" on the table. Camilla was a gem at this game as well as the other children learning the items on the table in English. Always learning, whether it's colors, shapes, sizes, fruits, table settings or just a small conversation. Always in English!!!!! FYI, KLC is always looking for volunteers; if you are available and would like to help; our dates of operation are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-3 pm. We will be open till October 31, 2019.

In preparation for Costa Rica’s Independence Day (September 15), the children made these patriotic projects. They learned how to follow instructions. They used scissors and glue and popsicle sticks. They learned how to fold paper in a fan shape. Happy Independence Day Nuevo Arenal from the students at KLC.

Welcome Ryan Tanguay! See you in August at Kid's Learning Community in Nuevo Arenal.

KLC will resume classes on August 6th.

Please welcome our new Intern who will be assisting Bettye for the next session.

Here's Ryan's story:

Hi, my name is Ryan Tanguay! I am 18 years old. I grew up in Southern California. I recently graduated from Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA) studying Production and Design with focus in Light Design. In addition to academics, OCSA students are given the opportunity to study and develop their artistic skills. Personally, my favorite was to work as the Master Electrician at our annual GALA.

I have always had a sense of adventure. Last year I was fortunate enough to volunteer with the GLA teen program in Thailand. Part of my time was spent volunteering at an Elephant Sanctuary dedicated to rehabilitation. The other part of my experience took me to a local school where I assisted in English lessons for 3rd and 4th graders. It was there that I discovered a passion for teaching and volunteering.

I am looking forward to the amazing opportunity at Kids Learning Community to combine my love of the arts and teaching. I am excited to meet all the kids and pursue my Teaching English as Foreign or Second Language Certification.

We look forward to seeing you at KLC real soon!
