Earlier today we talked about ESTAR — the other form of the to-be verb in Spanish —
SER is used to denote the essential characteristics of a subject. Something that cannot be changed such as nationalities, features, etc.
Ejemplo:
Marina es la jefa del departamento.
Yo soy latina.
Y tú, ¿qué eres?

In Spanish, we use this verb to reference the current state - condition - and to indicate the location of the noun.
• La señorita está enferma.
- the lady is sick.
It can change, it's not part of its essence.
After taking her medication, she'll be back as herself.
• La comida está sobre la mesa.
- the food is on the table.
