THINKING MIND R&D NOTE | FROM CBL + PBL TO C2I
How do you create more immersion when you have less time?0That question has guided part of Thinking Mind's R&D work since 2019.
Children have school. Families have increasingly limited time for extracurricular programs. Sometimes we have a weekend. Sometimes five days of vacation. Sometimes only a few selected school days.
So the challenge was never simply:
How can we teach more?
The real question was:
How can we make a few days of immersion powerful enough to continue producing memories, language and confidence long after the program ends? That search progressively shaped the way Thinking Mind uses CBL City-Based Learning for language immersion. For us, a city is not simply a destination for an excursion.The city becomes language material.
A market gives us prices, questions, transactions and people.
A monument gives us history, vocabulary and storytelling.
A street gives us directions, decisions and interaction.
A museum gives us questions.
Public transportation gives us real-life problem solving.
We don't simply visit the city. We extract immersion from it. Then comes PBL Project-Based Learning.
If CBL gives us the authentic environment and its language material, PBL gives students a mission: something to investigate, solve, create, document or present.
After years of campuses, weekends, vacations, international programs, experimentation, mistakes, adjustment and iteration, Thinking Mind R&D is formalizing the intersection of these two approaches for our language-immersion context as:
C2I, CITY-TO- IMMERSION
CITY → LANGUAGE MATERIAL → INTERACTION → PROJECT → LANGUAGE PRODUCTION → IMMERSION.
The city provides the reality.
The project provides the purpose.
Immersion connects both through language.
We have been progressively applying this philosophy across experiences such as Grow Camp Colombia, our WILL-GO experiences beyond the campus in more than 20 cities, where we operate, including the recent WILL-GO π, LEGO & CAPIBARA in Villa de Leyva and now IMMERSE SSG in London.
London gives us a particularly powerful laboratory...
