Want to know why Science of Reading is a mistake?

1️⃣ Communication Mode is Problematic. Grouping kids by communication mode (e.g., spoken vs. signed) doesn’t account for the wide range of language skills among deaf children (see Dills & Hall, 2021). Instead, reading approaches should be based on each child’s unique language foundation. If a child’s language is delayed, a reading approach that overlooks this will likely fall short. Tailored, skill-based methods are essential for real progress.

2️⃣ Fingerspelling ≠ Phonics. While fingerspelling can bridge ASL and English, it doesn’t offer deaf children the same benefits that phonics does for hearing children. For hearing kids, phonics acts as a “key” to unlock their spoken language knowledge. Decoding fingerspelling won’t have this effect for deaf kids unless they’re already fluent in short, commonly used fingerspelled words. Without that foundation, fingerspelling becomes an extra skill to learn that doesn’t give deaf children the same payoff as phonics does for hearing children. So, while fingerspelling can be *part* of reading instruction, it’s not a complete solution.
