Maximizing the benefits of immunization

Research is needed to accelerate development, licensing and uptake of vaccines that are currently in early development.

Non-syringe delivery mechanisms and vaccine packaging that best suit the needs and constraints of countries, thermostable vaccines that would be resistant to damage caused by freezing or excessive heat and new manufacturing technologies, are priority research areas for accelerating the development of next-generation vaccines that are more effective, less expensive and easier to manufacture and deliver to people and communities in need.

Great advances in immunization

In the last 10 years, great advances have been made in developing and introducing new vaccines and expanding the reach of immunization programmes.

There are now licensed vaccines being used to prevent, or contribute to the prevention and control of, 25 infections (see image below).

Would you be surprised if told that WHO was conceived over a chance lunch encounter?

Three delegates, all medical doctors, met by chance at a table over lunch on 2 May 1945 during the San Francisco Conference that was to give birth to the United Nations. They were Dr Szeming Sze of China (pictured right), Dr Geraldo de Paula Souza of Brazil (pictured left) and Dr Karl Evang of Norway. At that lunch, one of them first broached the topic: “Why don’t we start a new health organization?” The three founding fathers submitted a draft resolution seeking to convene another conference with the exclusive agenda of setting up a global health body. However, the Steering Committee already had too many draft resolutions on the agenda and there was no time for this one.

Then another “miracle luncheon” happened. Dr Sze found himself sitting next to the Secretary-General of the Conference, Mr Alger Hiss, at this lunch. The doctor briefed him about the scope and need of such a health organization, and expressed regret that no more resolutions were being allowed. Mr Hiss answered between bites, “Oh, it’s very simple. Don’t present it as a resolution, call it a declaration.” No sooner said than done. The Declaration was approved unanimously by the San Francisco Conference, since health is a matter of fundamental concern to all nations. That set off the chain of events culminating in the founding of WHO on 7 April 1948, the day which is celebrated every year as World Health Day.

Pneumonia and diarrhoea are leading killers of young children. Together, these diseases account for 29% or 2 million of all deaths of children less than 5 years of age.

Both diseases can be prevented and treated.

What’s behind the Essential Medicines List?

What’s behind the Essential Medicines List?

Diarrhoeal disease is the second leading cause of death in children under five years old, and is responsible for killing 760 000 children every year. Scaling up the use of zinc sulfate could potentially save the lives of many children. Used with oral rehydration salts, zinc can reduce the severity of childhood diarrhoea episodes. This is why WHO added a 20mg zinc tablet to its 2011 Model Essential Medicines List.

In its Model Essential Medicines List, WHO recommends the best medicines for priority health conditions worldwide. The List is updated every 2 years; the next update is due for the third quarter of 2013.
