Ceramic Proppant Pre-Shipment Batch Verification at SEPPE

During a recent pre-shipment verification, we did not take every sample from the bags at the front of the stack. The forklift moved the upper bags so that material stored below could also be reached. This gave us a better representation of the finished lot.

The verification covered:

✅ Bulk bags
We checked the fabric, stitching, lifting loops, moisture condition and batch identification.
✅ Composite sampling
A sampling tube was inserted into several selected bags. Portions from the same mesh size were combined, while the 16/30, 20/40 and 30/50 samples were kept separate.
✅ Laboratory verification
The composite samples were checked for particle-size distribution, density, crush resistance, turbidity, acid solubility and particle shape.
✅ Retained samples
Part of each composite sample was sealed, labelled and stored for 1–2 years. It can be used for comparison if a receiving test or field result later raises a question.

This is the final verification of a finished batch before dispatch. It connects the goods being shipped with the sample, laboratory record and retained reference.

Using cenospheres as a weight reducer in oilfield cementing? Don’t specify only “0–500 μm.” 🛢️

When lowering slurry density, cenospheres can help reduce density without simply adding extra water.

But the material specification matters.

Here’s a quick qualification checklist based on SEPPE CenoLite 8540:

🔍 1. Check the particle-size distribution

“0–500 μm” is only a broad size range.

The typical CenoLite 8540 gradation shows approximately 84% of particles within 63–250 μm.

Why does this matter?

Particle-size distribution can affect rheology, mixing behavior and slurry placement.

⚖️ 2. Know which density you are using

Bulk density: 0.39 g/cm³
≈ 1.54 m³ / 600 kg

Useful for storage, transportation and feeder planning.

True density: 0.83 g/cm³
≈ 0.72 m³ / 600 kg

Relevant for particle displacement and formulation calculations.

These two numbers should never be treated as interchangeable.

🧪 3. Floating rate is not crush resistance

A floating rate of >95% can confirm good initial buoyancy in a laboratory screening test.

But it does not prove pressure survival under downhole conditions.

For high-pressure wells, pressure-survival or crush-resistance requirements should be qualified separately.

📋 4. Qualify every batch

Before releasing a new batch for slurry testing:

• Check the COA against the approved specification
• Review particle-size distribution
• Verify density
• Retain samples for comparison
• Confirm any required pressure-survival qualification

The key point: “Cenosphere” is a material category — not a complete cementing specification.

A better qualification workflow can reduce formulation uncertainty before the material reaches the field.

Which is better: river, beach or rock garnet?

The source name alone cannot answer that question.

River garnet is often subangular after natural transport and processing. Beach garnet can range from rounded to subangular, and the finished batch should be checked for soluble contamination. Rock garnet is usually more angular after crushing, but good screening is needed to remove unwanted fines and oversized grains.

Sharper grains may cut more aggressively, but that is not always what the job needs. The right choice depends on the material being blasted, the coating to be removed and the required surface profile.

Before buying, check the sieve analysis, moisture, conductivity and water-soluble chloride results for the actual grade. A sample blasting test can tell you more than the source name.

How is Garnet Conductivity Tested?

Soluble salts left on freshly blasted steel can cause osmotic blistering and premature coating failure. When checking abrasive purity, ASTM D4940 is the go-to testing method.

4-Step Conductivity Testing Breakdown:
🔹 1 (Ratio): Mix 300 ml of garnet abrasive with 300 ml of pure/deionized water.
🔹 2 (Extraction): Stir for 1 minute ➔ Let it stand for 8 minutes ➔ Stir again for 1 minute to extract soluble salts into the water.
🔹 3 (Filtration): Filter the solution and discard the first 10 ml of liquid.
🔹 4 (Measurement): Test the filtered water using a calibrated conductivity meter until the reading is stable.

💡 Pro Tip:
Conductivity gives you a quick screening for total soluble salts. If you need to verify specific chloride levels, a separate chemical test is required!

A reliable garnet source matters, but it does not guarantee a consistent finished abrasive.

Raw garnet can contain dust, oversized grains, moisture and unwanted minerals. That is why quality control must continue through the entire production process.

For SEPPE SGA alluvial river garnet, the process includes raw material inspection, magnetic separation, washing, controlled drying and particle-size screening. Finished batches are then checked before packing.

Quality control also continues at loading. The packaging is reviewed, and the container must be clean and dry before the garnet is shipped.

This process supports more stable particle size, moisture and abrasive flow for blasting and waterjet cutting.

What does “5.9% fines at 10,000 psi” actually tell you about a ceramic proppant?

Not much, unless you also know the mesh size and test method.

A fair comparison requires the same conditions. A 20/40 result should be compared with another 20/40 result at the same pressure and under the same test procedure. When those conditions match, fewer generated fines indicate better crush resistance.

For example, SEPPE’s typical 20/40 data at 10,000 psi shows:

• SEPLITE LWP: 5.9% fines
• SEPROP ISP: 3.4% fines
• SEPREM HSP: 2.6% fines

This does not mean that the strongest grade is automatically right for every well. The expected closure stress, placement requirements and target conductivity still need to be considered.

Typical TDS values are useful for comparison. The batch COA should be checked before shipment.

Can garnet abrasive achieve Sa 2½ or Sa 3?

Yes. Properly processed garnet can remove rust, mill scale and old coatings to achieve either level.

The Sa grades describe how clean the steel looks after blasting:

• Sa 1: Loose rust, mill scale and coating are removed.
• Sa 2: Most rust, mill scale and coating are removed.
• Sa 2½: Only slight stains or streaks may remain.
• Sa 3: The steel is visually clean with a uniform metallic appearance.

On the SEPPE Garnet website(https://www.seppecn.com), SGA is the name used for our alluvial river garnet range. SGA 20/40 is coarser and more aggressive. SGA 30/60 offers a practical balance between cleaning speed and profile control.

Choosing the right mesh is a good starting point, but it cannot guarantee the result by itself. Heavy mill scale takes more work than light rust. Air supply, nozzle condition and the way the surface is blasted also make a difference.

Sa 3 is not automatically better than Sa 2½. The correct target should follow the coating specification and service conditions.

Also remember that Sa grade describes visible cleanliness, not surface profile. Both should be checked separately.
