President Li Peigen Present in the Signing Ceremony of Establishing the Confucius Institute Cooperative with our University

The Agreement for the Establishment of Confucius Institute at Universitade Federal Minas Gerais(UFMG) inBrazil, also the third one collaboratively undertaken by Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), was signed inBeijingon 14th of January 2013.and the Director of the Office of Chinese, signed the cooperative agreement with Dr. Clélio Campolina Diniz, President of UFMG.

Those present in the signing ceremony include the followings: President Li Peigen from HUST, Claudio Garon, Minister Counselor from Brazilian Embassy in China, Dr. Jing Wei, Vice Director of the Office of Chinese, Fan Ding, Dean of Division of Development and Planning,Cao Diefeng, Dean of Confucius Institute Administrative Office II, Eduardo Viana Vargas, Dean of International Relations at UFMG, Luo Qingming, Vice President of HUST, Yu Hailin，Executive Deputy Director of International School of HUST.

President Diniz gave a brief introduction to the basic information and major achievements about UFMG and the current demands and strong desires for establishing the Confucius Institute there, reviewed the development of establishing the Confucius Institute collaborative with HUST, believing that HUST and UFMG, both first-class national universities with solid strength, would be able to build well the Confucius Institute based on which the cooperation between HUST and UFMG would gradually extend to other fields including scientific research and talent cultivations.

President Li explained that our university had attached much importance to CI constructions. Both the Confucius Institute atWayneStateUniversityin Detroit of USA and that of UniversityofCanterburyinNew Zealandundertaken by HUST are being developed favorably. The CI at UFMG is the first one undertaken by HUST in non-English Speaking countries. What’s more, bothBrazilandChinaare large developing countries with a world influence. Therefore, both HUST and UFMG are supposed to make great and positive contributions to promote the relationship and friendship between the two nations by virtue of cooperation and cultural exchanges. Some of the state-owned corporations like Wuhan Steel and Iron, Fiber-home Technology, etc. have fast developed their business and cooperation in Brazil while our university has cultivated the good tradition of committing active service to the society. Thus, the Confucius Institute at UFMG will surely make great achievements in terms of promoting economic and social development.

Xu Lin, the Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), introduced that the Confucius Institute established overseas was a non-profit educational organization aiming to promote Chinese language and Culture in foreign countries. So far over 400 Confucius Institutes and 500 Confucius Classrooms have been established in 108 countries and regions with 650,000 enrolled students. The number of foreigners who are learning Chinese has reached more than 50 millions. She hopes that HUST and UFMG could commit an in-depth cooperation so as to contribute greatly for developing Sino-Brazilian friendship.

On January 17th , during President Diniz’s visiting our university, he signed a generic agreement between UFMG and HUST and discussed a scheme of promoting the Confucius Institute at UFMG with Dr.Luo Qingming, the Vice President of HUST at the meeting also attended by some leaders from the School of Foreign Languages, Humanities School, Office of Science and Technology Development and International Exchange Center. Besides, he also visited theSchoolofEconomicsand discussed warmly with Dr.Xu Changsheng,the School’s Dean. Their discussions involved many heated issues in the fields like urbanization construction, international business, economic development and environment protection.

HUST International Students Admission Hit another High Record in 2012

Fall semester in 2012, a total of 632 international students from 95 countries have come to study in HUST. The scale of international students in our university has further expanded, and the structure has further optimized.

From the distribution of five continents, it becomes more balanced. The number of international students in Asiaincreased steadily, accounting for 55% of the total new international students. In Europe andAmerica, the number also grew constantly, which accounting for 17%.

From the distribution of country, many more countries have involved. Our university has admitted advanced students fromItaly, masters fromFrance, German,Greece,Poland,Australia, etc., and doctors fromSwitzerland,Britainfor the first time.

Judging from the student category, high level students have increased constantly. The scale of high level students, such as masters, doctors, visiting scholars, etc, has further expanded, with a number of 339 and a proportion of 54% in total new students.

Judging from the instruction language, English teaching students accounted for 67.4%. The setting up of full English teaching in relevant departments has played a very important role in attracting international students. For example, full English –medium undergraduate programs in Clinical faculty, Telecom department,MechanicalCollege,collegeofPharmacy, etc, have driven the increase of undergraduate students. In full English-medium program, undergraduate students in Clinical took the first place, masters and doctors in Management occupied the first place.

From the distribution of department, more and more departments have begun to cultivate international students. In some departments which have cultivated many more international students before, the number of international student’s enrollment kept growing steadily this year. Such as, Tongji Medical College, School of Management, Telecommunication Department, School of Economics, School of Public Administration, School of Life Science and Technology, Department of Chinese Language & Literature, School of Computer Science and Technology, etc. The number of international students in some other colleges also began to increase, such asSchoolofChemistryand Chemical Engineer,SchoolofJournalismand Information Communication,SchoolofForeign Language, Department of Philosophy, etc.

Judging from the students’ graduation college, more and more foreign famous universities students chose to study in our university, such as students from University of Toronto in Canada, University of Portsmouth, University of Chester, Coventry University in Britain, Technical University Munich in Germany, National University of Singapore, Lander University in Sweden, Politechnika Krakowska in Poland, Waseda University in Japan, Waseda University in Thailand, Ankara University in Turkey, University of Sao Paulo in Brazil.

HUST Representatives Attended the Reception Party for International Students by the Ministry of Education of China

On January 13, 2013 reception party for International Students was held by the Ministry of Education of China at the Central China Normal University. Representatives of HUST were invited to attend the reception and HUST Latin American students’ Latin dance won good praise from the audience.

At the party, Chen Ying-Hui, Deputy Director of International cooperation and exchanges of the Ministry of Education said that in 2012 there were 320,000 international students from 197 countries and regions learning in China and again highlighted the importance of international education of Chinese universities. International students have added considerably meaningful contents and colors to the Chinese university. More communication and exchanges between Chinese students and international students also develop and publicize the Chinese culture constantly. What’s more, China’s international education has been improved to some extent because of them.

Chen Ying-Hui also announced that by the year of 2020, international students in China will reach about 500,000 and China will become the largest oversea study destination in Asia.
