该校溯源于1893年清末湖广总督张之洞奏请清政府创办的自强学堂历经传承演变，1913年改名国立武昌高等师范学校，（关于武汉大学始于1893年的自强学堂，还是1913年的国立武昌高等师范学校，还存在争议）。1928年，改建定名为国立武汉大学。1949年更名为武汉大学。2000年与武汉水利电力大学、武汉测绘科技大学、湖北医科大学合并组建新的武汉大学。
