On May 18, PHBS hosted an academic lecture titled “China’s Economy in the Changing World” as part of the kickoff of the “Harvard Deep Dive in China: Peking University” program.

Professor Hai Wen, Founding Dean of PHBS, shared his views on China’s economic development amid global change, offering students a closer look at how China is evolving today.

Beyond the lecture, the visit created space for young people across the academic community to exchange ideas, connect across cultures, and build mutual understanding.

Recently, PHBS international students visited iFLYTEK, one of China’s leading AI and intelligent technology companies, for a closer look at the innovations shaping everyday life and communication.

During the visit, students explored the company’s journey and learned how iFLYTEK’s innovations in AI-powered learning, language technology, and human-computer interaction are transforming industries and daily experiences alike.

What drives economic growth during credit expansions — households or firms?

Using evidence from U.S. bank deregulation in the 1980s, new research co-authored by PHBS Assistant Professor Yicheng Wang finds that the firm channel accounts for around 71% of the impact on output and employment, as lower borrowing costs enable firms to invest and expand. The household channel contributes about 27%, mainly through consumption and early-stage effects.

PHBS international students recently visited Zhongshan, exploring how this historic city is carving out its role within the Greater Bay Area.

The trip began at the Museum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, offering a glimpse into Zhongshan’s cultural roots. Students then visited a mix of industrial parks and innovation hubs, including Perfect (China) South China Base and Zhongshan Scientist Town, where they observed activity across manufacturing, healthcare, and local entrepreneurship initiatives.

Reflecting on the visit, Daniel (Economics, 2025 Intake) shared:
“This made me realize how much more there is to the Pearl River Delta beyond Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong.”
