Venom does more than hurt.

In a new Nature study, SMART scientists, led by Nieng Yan, Xiao Fan, and Jian Huang, revealed how three venom-derived toxins hijack the human sodium channel Naᵥ1.6, each in a different way.

By capturing these molecular “attack poses,” the study turns some of nature’s most painful weapons into clues for understanding nerve signaling, epilepsy, chronic pain, and future drug discovery.

The team is hiring Co-PI and Postdocs.

“How do we sleep? Why do we sleep?”

For Professor Yang Dan, these questions lead to one of neuroscience’s deepest challenges: consciousness.

SMART congratulates Prof. Dan, Senior Principal Investigator and Director of the Institute of Neuromodulation and Cognition, on being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Prof. Dan joined SMART full-time in June 2025. Her research continues to advance our understanding of sleep, consciousness, cognitive control, and visual processing.

Congratulations to Professor Yang Dan, Director and Senior Principal Investigator of the Institute of Neuromodulation and Cognition at SMART, on being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.

A leading neuroscientist in sleep, consciousness, cognitive control, and visual processing, Prof. Dan has helped advance our understanding of how neural circuits shape perception, behavior, and brain states.

This honor follows her election to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2018 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2025.

Sleep isn’t just your brain switching off.
It’s your whole body joining the conversation.
In a new review published online in Annual Review of Neuroscience, Yang Dan and Yuanyuan Yao at SMART summarize how the lower brainstem integrate signals from the body, such as heart beating, breathing, digestion and immunity, with sleep and wakefulness.
A fresh look at why we sleep, and how deeply the brain and body work together. ✨
