Tsinghua SIGS The official page of Tsinghua SIGS, jointly founded by Tsinghua University and the Shenzhen Municipal Government.

Launched in March 2019, SIGS is Tsinghua University’s only campus located outside of Beijing, and is a further expansion and integration of the Tsinghua Graduate School at Shenzhen (GSST) and the Tsinghua Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI). Founded in 2001 and 2014 respectively, GSST and TBSI have laid a strong foundation for the establishment of SIGS. Given the advanced resources of Tsinghua University and the vibrant entrepreneurship environment in Shenzhen, we provide world-class graduate programs, conduct cutting-edge scientific research, and collaborate with industry in the City and the Greater Bay Area.

In our latest edition of Scholar Voices, we invite you to meet Associate Professor Peter Búš.

Originally from Slovakia, Prof Búš turned his eyes from Europe to Asia to expand his research and think outside the box. In 2022, he joined Tsinghua SIGS’s Institute of Future Human Habitats (iFHH), where he founded the Co-intelligent Architecture Lab. His team brings together architects, computer scientists, and robotics specialists to develop adaptive, human-centered construction workflows combining AI, mixed reality, and robotic systems.

For Prof Búš, Shenzhen’s dense urban landscape and vibrant tech ecosystem offer the ultimate testbed: "My thinking has jumped to a bigger context, and it somehow opens a new horizon for me."

Tsinghua SIGS signed a memorandum of cooperation (MoU) and a student exchange agreement with Chimie ParisTech - PSL during its recent visit to France. The two sides will advance cooperation on joint research, co-supervision of PhD students, and faculty and scholar exchanges.

Our SIGS delegation also visited other leading higher education institutions in Italy and France from Aug. 31 to Sept. 4 to strengthen cooperation.

Smarter for robotics! team, led by Prof. Ding Wenbo and Prof. Wang Hongzhang from Tsinghua SIGS , developed a liquid-wetting gripper for automated pick-and-place of objects of various shapes, as published in Elsevier. The gripper enables reversible fixation and release, with a lifting capacity of up to 10 kg.

The 2026 Fall University-Enterprise Innovative Engineers Development Program Fair brought together:

🏢 Nearly 40 leading companies, including Huawei, Tencent, Mindray, ByteDance and Meituan.
đź’ˇ 300+ industry-driven projects

🌏 A new milestone this year: for the first time, the fair featured a dedicated session for international students. More than 200 international students explored practical training opportunities from six companies, including Tencent, BGI Group, OPPO, Shokz and the Urban Planning & Design Institute of Shenzhen.

Since 2024, the program has been building stronger connections between students, universities and industry—turning academic learning into engineering practice.

LineShine, a Shenzhen-based supercomputer, has climbed to the top of the global TOP500 rankings — marking China's return to the number one spot after nearly a decade.

What sets it apart? Instead of relying on GPUs, it uses an all-CPU architecture with built-in matrix acceleration. The result: 2.19 exaflops of sustained FP64 performance on HPL, making it 22% faster than its closest competitor.

Tsinghua SIGS has played a key supporting role in this achievement — from algorithm adaptation and parallel optimization to application demonstration across weather, ocean, and remote sensing scenarios. Professor Haohuan Fu and his team at SIGS have been using LineShine to combine physics-based weather models with AI, improving rainfall predictions across East Asia. They completed a decade’s worth of retrospective rainfall forecast testing in just 14.6 hours.

From weather forecasting to atomic-scale material simulation, LineShine is already tackling real-world challenges — and SIGS researchers are at the forefront of turning its power into tangible scientific outcomes. A milestone for independent innovation, and a powerful system for the future of scientific discovery.
