Today is 元宵节！Happy Lantern Festival! People in China celebrate the official end of the Spring festival on this day. A typical dish eaten on this festival is 汤圆 (tāngyuán）- Small round balls made of glutinous rice, that usually have sweet fillings, served in a sweet soup or broth.

Here in China, 除夕快到了！It is almost that time of year we celebrate 除夕: a day on which family members gather to start the Chinese New Year celebrations. What are your holiday plans? Let us know in the comments :)
Do you know the Chinese expression '不怕一万，只怕万一 '(bùpà wàn yī zhǐ pà yī wàn) yet?
Maybe you do, maybe you don't, but make sure to watch this video - Just in case ;)
Class notes:
不怕 = Not afraid
一万 = Ten-thousand
只怕 = Only afraid
万一 = 1/10.000
A translation of this sentence would be: to be prepared for the one risk in ten thousand.
More simply said though, this expression has a smilar meaning to: 'just in case'.
万一 = spoken Chinese to say ‘ just in case’.
Example:
我们还是早点儿出发吧，万一迟到了呢？
Wǒmen háishì zǎodiǎnr chūfā ba, wàn yī chídàole ne?
Translation: Let’s depart early, just in case we will be late.

It's getting cold! 冬至 is here! Did you eat your dumplings yet? If you know why Chinese people say that we should eat dumplings in winter to protect our ears, let us know in the comments!
Watch & Learn the number one Chinese idiom you need to learn before the end of this year: 临时抱佛脚 (línshí bào fó jiǎo).
Class notes:
临时 (línshí) means: temporary.
抱 (bào) means: to hug.
佛 (fó) means: Buddha.
脚 (jiǎo) means: feet.
Literally translated, this sentence means: To temporarily hug Buddha’s feet.
We hear you: Hugging your own or someone else's feet doesn't seem comfortable.
The real meaning of this expression is however completely different. It means: To procrastinate doing something to the very last minute.
People in China usually use this idiom to describe a person who procrastinates doing something important until the very last minute.

In China people have a very indirect way of saying that someone is gossiping:‘吃瓜’. However, it does not have anything to do with a watermelon!
