is making Cooking more sustainable! When most people think of sustainability in skill competitions, they might picture solar panels being installed, electric circuits being wired for energy efficiency, or hybrid vehicles being maintained. But Cooking is emerging as an ambitious sustainability laboratory within WorldSkills, reflecting a broader global shift toward greener practices in the hospitality sector.

That transformation is being driven from WorldSkills Occupational Standards and the skill’s Technical Description.

As celebrates Earth Day 2026, we acknowledge the crucial role that skills plays in making societies more resilient to climate change.

Taking place alongside WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 this September, WorldSkills Conference 2026 ensures sustainability discussions are embedded in all sessions to reflect the critical role skills play in addressing one of society’s most pressing challenges. Building on this foundation, on the third day of the Conference, the session “TVET and the green transition: Building policy coherence around skills demand” will bring together policymakers, educators, and industry leaders to turn that conversation into action.

"The green transition is powered by people, but the demand for green skills is outpacing supply,” said Friedrich Huebler, Head of UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for TVET, adding that “Technical Vocational Education and Training helps countries put climate policies into practice by equipping learners with the skills for green jobs and workplaces."

The green transition cannot succeed without skilled workers, and skilled workers cannot meet the challenge without quality TVET systems, industry commitment, and coherent policy.

WorldSkills Conference 2026 will bring these conversations to life.

"All over the world, a contradiction persists. Young people represent a significant share of the population, but remain largely absent from the spaces where decisions that shape their futures are made," says Yousra Assali, former Champions Trust representative for the Middle East and North Africa region.

Yousra spoke at the launch of UNESCO's report "Learning today, shaping tomorrow: Excellence and equity through youth skills” held in Tunis, North Africa.

Drawing on her own experience and her advocacy work across the region, she addressed two of the session's central questions: how to make career guidance meaningful for young people, and how to transform the perception and reach of Technical Vocational Education and Training systems.
