How to Use 不 vs 没 in Chinese | The Chinese “NOT” Grammar Rule Explained (HSK 1-2)
Ever confuse 不 (bù) and 没 (méi) in Chinese? 🇨🇳 You’re not alone — this is one of the most common beginner grammar mistakes.
The good news? The rule is actually much simpler than most learners think.
✨ 不 = habit / choice / description
✨ 没 = something didn’t happen
Here’s the classic mistake:
❌ 我昨天不去上班。
(Wǒ zuótiān bù qù shàngbān.)
✅ 我昨天没去上班。
(Wǒ zuótiān méi qù shàngbān.)
I didn’t go to work yesterday.
💡 Why?
“Yesterday” = a completed past event.
The action didn’t happen → use 没.
Now compare these:
☕ 我不喝咖啡。
(Wǒ bù hē kāfēi.)
I don’t drink coffee.
→ habit / preference
🍺 我今天没喝酒。
(Wǒ jīntiān méi hē jiǔ.)
I didn’t drink alcohol today.
→ one event today
📅 我明天不去。
(Wǒ míngtiān bù qù.)
I’m not going tomorrow.
→ choice / plan
🍚 我还没吃饭。
(Wǒ hái méi chīfàn.)
I haven’t eaten yet.
→ action hasn’t happened
⚠️ Important rule:
有 (yǒu) only works with 没有
❌ 不有
✅ 没有
✨ Quick memory trick:
Didn’t happen?
→ 没
Habit, choice, description?
→ 不
