一边……一边…… (yī biān... yī biān...) — Simultaneous Actions

一边……一边…… is used to describe two actions happening at the same time. It is similar to “while doing something…” in English.

💡 Think of it like:
You do one thing while doing another thing at the same time.

• Two actions happen together
• One action continues while another action happens
• Commonly used for daily activities

🧠 Structure:
Subject + 一边 + Verb 1 + 一边 + Verb 2

⚠️ Pronunciation note:
In written pinyin, we write yī biān.
But in spoken Chinese, 一 (yī) changes tone depending on the following syllable.

For 一边 (yī biān):
边 (biān) is a first-tone syllable, so 一 is pronounced yì in natural speech.

➡️ Written: yī biān
➡️ Spoken: yì biān

Wǒ yī biān zuò fàn, yī biān tīng bōkè.
I cook while listening to a podcast.

Use 在 (zài) to say where someone or something is.

Structure:
Subject + 在 + Place

老师在教室。
Lǎoshī zài jiàoshì.
The teacher is in the classroom.

我的书在桌子上。
Wǒ de shū zài zhuōzi shàng.
My book is on the table.
