School of Media and Design (SMD), Shanghai Jiao Tong University, was founded in September 2002. The objective of the school emphasizes on solid theoretical foundation, high competitiveness in professional skills and distinctive disciplinary features.
SMD features its teaching as following: interaction of arts and science, interdependence of theory and practice, interconnection of technology, academic research and arts, internationalization, digitization and integration of Industry-University-Research. It orients itself toward setting up cluster of disciplines where journalism and communication, arts and management interact and complement each other. SMD aims at training and developing a new generation of “multi-talented graduates” who are not only equipped with modern communication theory and technique, but also with design creativity.
SMD cooperates with SJTU’s School of Electronics, Information, andElectrical Engineering, Antai School of Economics and Management, and Instituteof Arts and Humanities. It also has close cooperative relationships with suchfamous companies as Baidu and SMG. In addition, SMD has close researchcollaboration with a number of prestigious schools around the world.

Program Overview
This master program provides a broad guide to the cultural economy, including orientation through this complex field and up-to-date knowledge with a focus on current industry, policy and community development. It aims at cultivating high-level professionals in cultural and creative industries management who hold both super research ability and solid practical skills in the information age. Thisis a full-time master program with the normal length of 2 years.

All applicants of international programs must be non-Chinese citizens.
Master program applicants must have a bachelor degree.
Doctoral program applicants must have a master degree.
Applicants for both master and doctoral programs must complete the IELTS (minimum score 6) or TOEFL (minimum score 90). Applicants who are native English speakers are exempt.

M.A. Program in New Media Studies
Overview
The goal of our master program in new media studies is to train professionals who have both thinking and technical skills to work in the field of new media. Specifically, SMD teaches students how to create and better understand content strategies, web and interactive design and development, and the transformation of visual and written communication on digital platforms and in digital culture more broadly. The program provides rigorous theory and technical education that emphasizes both breadth and depth. It strengthens students’ knowledge in journalism, communication, and digital technologies to provide a solid basis upon which professional skills are built. The length of master program is 2 years.
Ph.D. Program in New Media Studies
Overview
The goal of our Ph.D. program is to develop world-class innovative leaders who can work in international universities and research institutes in the field of new media studies. A Ph.D. degree is given in recognition of a student’s outstanding knowledge and innovative capability in a specific field. SMD encourages cutting-edge research, and emphasizes disruptive technologies and paradigm-shifting approaches. It seeks cooperation with research projects in government and industry to achieve international impact. It also encourages international cooperation and exchange, through short-term study abroad programs or participation in international conferences. The length of doctoral study is 3 years.

Program Overview
This master program specializes in fusing major innovation, traininghigh-end designers, building integrated design and research platform. We focus on preparing students to shape a sustainable future by helping our students develop a process for innovative solutions we call design thinking. It includescreative and analytical approaches and cross-disciplinary collaborations. The process will utilize a variety of inputs from different areas: methods from engineering and design, ideas from art, tools from social science and in sights from business. Students will be taught the basic method, then personalize theirown way, internalize it and apply to their own challenges with the help of ourexperienced faculties.
With our strong reputation, our program has maintained close collaborations with many great companies, which enables us to practice many product development projects. We also cooperate with various outstanding international design schools, working together in academic research andeducation area to shape a better future for our students.
Specifically designed for international students, the program aims at cultivating high-end art and design professionals in the following areas: new product and services design, interaction design, visual communication design,landscape design, interior design, public art design. Ph.D. Program in Design
Program Overview
The Ph.D. in Design is an interdisciplinary program which crosses four different majors of design, mechanical engineering, management engineering, and ecology. It also connects majors include material engineering, environmental engineering,computer science, software engineering, phycology, control management engineering. The program is trying to cultivate high-end researchers with international background and visions, with solid research capability and theory knowledge, obtained a variety of knowledge in respective area, could bring appropriate solutions in methodology, theory and practice and create innovative toolbox for solving practical interdisciplinary problems. The graduates would be capable to do research, education and management work in area of cross-boundary margin include “design innovation ”, “smart manufacturing”, “qualitycontrol”, “brand strategy”.
The length of the course is usually 4 years.
