𝘽𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝘾𝙖𝙨𝙚 𝙋𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙘 𝙎𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟭


Vaccines are now being rolled out around the globe, and with vaccines being much more effective than hoped, governments are full speed ahead to try and minimise the effects of the Pandemic before the end of these terrible winter waves. It is estimated that once all vulnerable people and people over the age of 50 are vaccinated that deaths and hospitalisations will drop by 99%, and that this might be achieved by wealthy countries by April. This does raise questions about whether younger people need the vaccine, although the counter argument would be to vaccinate everyone except children to achieve herd immunity and a near 100% reduction in death and hospitalisation.

Whilst the vaccines protect from hospitalisation and death, symptoms and infection, there are not yet numbers on how much the vaccines reduce individual contagiousness. Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca Studies (Similar results expected for all vaccines that target the spike protein):

100% Protection from Death (All studies)
100% Protection from Hospitalisation (All studies)
95% Protection from Symptoms (mRNA vaccines, Pfizer/Moderna)
70% Protection from Infection (weekly PCR swab test, AstraZeneca)
??% Protection from being contagious

There are estimates that from 60-90% of populations will need antibodies (from vaccine or infection) in order to achieve herd immunity, this is likely to be closer to 90% (pretty much everyone except children and immunocompromised) as the virus is extremely contagious. Those in populations suffering badly from the pandemic who plan to refuse taking the vaccine can expect to be excluded from various activities such as flying or working directly with others, so that they don't accidentally kill anyone, until the pandemic is over.

Given we don't know how much the vaccines protect form infecting others, it will be interesting to see how restrictions evolve for people who have been vaccinated, will they be able to travel, work and play sooner than those who are not yet vaccinated. This has significant implications for economies. Perhaps a vaccine passport will be issued, similar to the World Health Organisation’s Yellow Vaccination Card (see image).

𝘽𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝘾𝙖𝙨𝙚 𝙎𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙤

Virus eradication is not going to happen, the virus is endemic and will remain so.

Humanity builds up immunity to the virus and it becomes “just another” seasonal cold. There is some speculation that 1889–1895 pandemic and outbreaks were the introduction of the now common cold coronavirus HCoV-OC43. Hopefully this would only take a year or two as the vaccines will accelerate immunity.

𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝘾𝙖𝙨𝙚 𝙎𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙤

The virus remains very deadly and contagious and continues to mutate so that existing vaccines become less effective. There’s little data on this but the virus does seem to be mutating relatively slowly, it’s expected that the current vaccines will cover the current known new strains.

Immunity to the virus from the vaccine lessens over time enabling reinfection, there’s little data on this beyond a few cases of reinfection over the Summer. It's hoped that the current vaccines will give good coverage for at least 1-3 years.

Vaccine hesitancy (wealthy countries) or delays in rollouts (poorer countries) result in herd immunity not being achieved in many populations, requiring the need for ongoing testing, tracing, mask wearing, social distancing, and continuing lockdowns needed to play whack-a-mole with sporadic outbreaks.

We could be living with the deadly threat of Covid indefinitely, the good news is that the vaccines can easily be tweaked to cover any new emerging strains when necessary so possibly an annual or bi-annual vaccination would provide protection.

𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙎𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙒𝙚 𝙄𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝘿𝙞𝙜𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙀𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙤𝙢𝙮 “𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙮 𝙖𝙩 𝙃𝙤𝙢𝙚” 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙘𝙠𝙨

The final outcome will be somewhere between these two extremes, but whether the virus continues to accelerate demand for digital economy companies or not, most of them still have multi-decade growth runways ahead, as the world slowly migrates to the fully mature Digital Economy. A word of caution though, valuations remain very high and digital economy stocks will not remain ”in fashion” indefinitely, corrections and crashes will happen in the years ahead, which is why you should use dollar cost averaging to build up your portfolio slowly over a period of years.
