From Rambert’s heritage to the international stage. 🌍

This summer, young dancers from around the world came together in San Sebastián for the Global Dance Open Grand Finals as the 2026 Young Artists of the Globe.

These aspiring dancers had the opportunity to learn, rehearse and perform a Rambert Grades Storytellers solo choreographed by Olivier Award-winning choreographer Will Tuckett.

Inspired by the ‘Aviary’ movement from Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals, Tuckett’s Grade 2 solo draws on a piece of Rambert’s rich performance history.

It was wonderful to see Rambert Grades repertoire taken beyond the studio and onto an international stage, giving these young artists the chance to work with professional choreography, develop their performance skills and share the experience with dancers from across the world.

What if dance education began with curiosity? 🌱

Young children already have an instinctive relationship with movement. They run, jump, spin, stretch, explore space and respond to music and imagination.

Contemporary Dance can build on that natural curiosity by developing physical skills, musicality and confidence alongside creativity.

For some children, it can complement ballet, tap, modern or another style. For others, it can be their very first experience of dance.

We are deeply saddened by the death of Sir Richard Alston CBE.

A profoundly influential figure in contemporary dance, Richard Alston holds a significant place in Rambert’s history. He joined the company in 1980 as Resident Choreographer and served as Artistic Director from 1986 to 1992, creating 25 works for the company during his time there. His relationship with Rambert continued for more than four decades.

We are proud to share photographs from Rambert's archive alongside more recent images of Richard sharing his choreography with young dancers.

In 2025, he coached finalists at the Global Dance Open, bringing his generosity, curiosity and love of dance to the next generation, supported by Rambert Grades Director of Training and Examinations, Hannah Kidd, as Rehearsal Director.

It was a fitting reflection of Richard’s lifelong commitment to sharing his knowledge and encouraging the next generation of artists.

His contribution to contemporary dance lives not only through the extraordinary body of work he leaves behind, but also through the many dancers, choreographers and artists he inspired, supported and taught throughout his career.

Our thoughts are with Richard’s family, friends, colleagues and all those who had the privilege of learning from, working with and being inspired by him.

Un’opportunità speciale per insegnanti e professionisti della danza contemporanea: dal 30 ottobre al 1° novembre 2026, tre giornate di formazione dedicate al Level 1 di Rambert Grades, che comprende i Grades 1, 2 e 3.

🩰 Rambert Grades nasce dalla collaborazione tra la compagnia Rambert e la Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance ed è un percorso innovativo che integra tecnica, performance e creatività.

Taking the syllabus to the big stage ✨

Global Dance Open 2026 Young Artists of the Globe had the opportunity to rehearse and perform a special group adaptation of the 'Carnival of the Animals' solo from the Rambert Grades Storytellers Performance Strand, giving a brilliant performance at the final in July.

How can you communicate more clearly through your movement?

Encourage dancers to think about intention, clarity and expression. What story are they trying to tell? How does each movement support their communication?

We’re bringing our Level 1 Syllabus Training to Northern School of Contemporary Dance Leeds this autumn, offering a rare opportunity to train in person as a Rambert Grades Trained Teacher.

If you're a dance artist, educator, final-year student or recent graduate looking to develop your teaching practice and broaden your professional opportunities, this could be your next step.

Train to deliver Grades 1–3 of the Rambert Grades Contemporary Dance Syllabus, with training across the Technical, Creative and Performance Strands, including repertoire by Hofesh Shechter.
