Lanzhou Ceramic Residency

This group of platters above are from the exhibition at the end of our residency at Lanzhou City University in 2017. It is the piece that I was most pleased with. Below is the inspiration for the piece, a photo of cracked clay at he bottom of a periodic water reservoir used to resupply ground water at an oasis at the edge of the Gobi desert and the point where the silk road entered China. I am thinking of remaking them and firing it in my anagama kiln

Here is a view walking down from the Buddhist temple complex high above Lanzhou during my residency I will put more images of this amazing place in a day or so. I have been taking a break from social media and maybe I am back..maybe not.

Over a long weekend our group spent time working in a ceramics factory in the city Baiyin, Pingchuan district in Gansu Province, . They let us use any form that was produced in the factory and it was quite an experience. More images to come!

After finishing our residency in 2017, we took the newly opened bullet train from Lanzhou to Xian where of course we went to see the terracotta warriors in place. It was magnificent even in the 107 degree weather. All I wanted to do was eat ice cream.
