This summer, Eric attended his first academic conference in Dublin, where he presented research with Professor Paula Ganga on the relationship between foreign aid and emissions in the Global South. Using data from 179 countries spanning 1973–2020, the project also considers the role of institutional quality and corruption.

Why did high school students from around the world come to DKU this summer? 🌏

The 2026 DKU Global Summer Institute brought together high school students from nine countries, who traveled to DKU to explore new interests, experience university life, and learn alongside peers from different cultures.

Across seven themes, students explored Personal Strengths for Global Futures, Science in Everyday Life, Artificial Intelligence, Climate Change and Sustainability, AI-powered Self-Driving, and the Human Journey into Space. They also worked in teams, gave presentations, conducted experiments, and tackled real-world questions beyond the classroom.

What's it like to learn at a cancer hospital in China? 🏥

This summer, Elizabeth Saavedra’28 shadowed professionals in the Radiation Physics Department at Zhejiang Cancer Hospital, exploring how medicine, physics, and technology come together in precision oncology. She also had the rare opportunity to learn about carbon ion therapy, an advanced cancer treatment available at only a limited number of centers worldwide.

Beyond the science, she built connections with doctors, researchers, and peers from different backgrounds, a meaningful experience that will stay with her beyond the summer.

That idea became the foundation of Rittik Barua's Signature Work: a VR experience designed to help people with ADHD stay engaged by rewarding attention rather than punishing distraction. Inspired by his own experience, Rittik transformed a personal challenge into a tool that supports others, turning lived experience into technology designed with empathy.
