Abhijit Kolla scored an 8.0 overall, with a maximum 9.0 in the Speaking test and an 8.5 in the Listening test. He currently studies medicine in New Zealand. Abhijit generously shares a few great tips with us:

- Do not take the test lightly; look up the rules and understand what you will be facing.
- Doing well on the first three sections of the Reading and Listening tests, which are easier than the last section, will help you achieve a better overall score
- Learn important writing patterns to apply to the Writing test. Take some time before your test date to practise writing under timed conditions.

To help with his final point, Abhijit recommends Road to IELTS, calling it a ‘trump card’ that allowed him to compare his written answers with standard answers, a vital step in understanding what he had missed.

When practising for the Reading test, Abhijit initially began by reading all of the passage in an untimed environment. Over time, he would only read the passage to get the right answer to the questions. When he felt comfortable working that way, he started to time himself.

Understanding all the words in the test
Remember, listening effectively does not mean you need to understand every single word you hear. In fact, you should not even try. When native speakers listen, they pick up on the most important words and phrases which carry meaning, and that is what you should try to do. Do not panic if you do not understand each word!
