Middlebury School in China: Hangzhou

Middlebury School in China: Hangzhou Immersive study abroad program with top tier language instruction in the scenic city of Hangzhou. Join us for a unique and life-changing China experience!

The C.V. Starr-Middlebury School in China, in cooperation with CET Academic Programs, offers immersion opportunities in the language and culture in three distinct locations: Beijing, Hangzhou, and Kunming. Intended for students with an intermediate to advanced level of Chinese language, the program structure, including housing with Chinese roommates, is designed to expose students to an environment that will build upon their foundation of Chinese while rapidly increasing their knowledge of the language and culture. Students enrolled in the School in China take all of their courses in Chinese, including content-based electives and the unique one-on-one tutorial. Living with Chinese roommates, students use their language skills in a relaxed environment outside of the classroom. Students in all locations have the opportunity to spend January term in Beijing preceding, following, or in-between the fall or spring semester. For more information, including instructions on how to apply, please visit the official webpage at http://www.middlebury.edu/sa/china/hangzhou.

Thanks to funding from Middlebury College's Office of Sustainability Integration and support from The Nature Conservancy, we have been able to venture into a rural village on the outskirts of Hangzhou over the past few semesters. Its not everyday that we get to sit down and chat in Chinese with local government officials, hear about water quality protection, learn about how local economics can coincide with sustainability, and get invited to villagers' homes to interview them about their everyday life.
