International students of School of International Education (SIE) participated in 2019 Sports Meet of Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University (GPNU)

On the 14th and 15th of November, 2019 Sports Games of GPNU was held in Baiyun Campus. Nineteen athletes of SIE from eight countries of Africa and Europe participated in eleven sports events such as 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 1500 meters, 110m hurdles, 4*100m relay, long jump, high jump, discus, shot and javelin.

In two days’ heated competition, international students showed their spirit of solidarity, mutual support and fighting. Paul, a Ugandan athlete, lived up to expectations and once again won the first place in the men's discus and the second place in the shot put. This was the fourth time that Paul has won the championship of discus in GPNU sports meet. He was the veritable king of this project. Between the games, international students’ African drums and singing and dancing attracted many onlookers and became a beautiful landscape outside the field of play. The attendance of international students added an international color to the Games. It also enabled the faculty and students to see the vitality and enthusiasm of international students, and helped international students to experience the campus culture of GPNU and better integrate into the big family of GPNU.

Theme class activity for international students of 2017 International Business Class is carried out in Lingnan Impression Park

In order to help the international students enrich their spare-time life, learn more about Lingnan culture and hold a glimpse of both the beauty and extensiveness of Chinese culture, a theme class activity was carried out for 21 international students of the 2017 International Business Class from more than 10 countries in Lingnan Impression Park on the morning of October 30, 2019. The class teacher Hui Yanyan and the interns of Hanshan Normal University took part in the activity as well.

The international students mainly visited the traditional architectural community of Lingnan Impression Park and Lingnan Temple Fair Street. Before entering the Impression Park, Hui Yanyan introduced the history and characteristics of Lingnan Impression Park in English. In Tianhou Temple, Baogong Temple, and Lord Doumu Temple, Hui Yanan explained the religion of China, especially the historical origins of Taoism and its main features and the religious policies of our country. In the area of the traditional house (with two wok-ear-shaped gables) complex, Hui Yanyan explained the architectural features and main functions of this house, and explained in detail the relationship between these functions and the climate characteristics of the Lingnan area. In the area of Central Lake, Hui Yanyan introduced the place and role of water in Chinese culture, and Guangdong Province’s role and influence in transportation with the longest coastline in China.

International students listened to Hui Yanyan with great interest and asked questions from time to time. This class activity attracted many students who participated in the autumn tour, and they greeted the international students and took photos with them.

This activity showed international students the charm of Lingnan culture and also offered them a chance to get close to the citizens of Guangzhou. They expressed their hope to learn more about culture and have more opportunities to integrate into the lives of locals.

SIE Organizes the International Students to Mount Baiyun for Cultural Experience
For the purpose of helping the international students in China to appreciate the cultural connotation of South Guangdong and cultivating international talents who "know, befriend and love Guangdong", on the afternoon of October 12, 2019, School of International Education (SIE) organized 33 international students from the Business Administration Class of 2019 and the Chinese Language Training Elite Class to Mount Baiyun for cultural experience.

At 4 o'clock in the afternoon, teachers and the students arrived at the South Gate of Mount Baiyun and started mountain climbing. Mount Baiyun is the natural oxygen bar in Guangzhou City, having a reputation of “First Beauty of Yangcheng” since ancient times. The international students enjoyed the natural scenery of Mount Baiyun and experienced the leisure and fun of people living in Guangzhou. They also chatted with the mountain-climbing citizens in Chinese, attracting many people to come and take photos. After climbing to the top, they took a view at the city and appreciated the prosperity of Guangzhou being an international metropolis.

At 7 o'clock in the evening, teachers and the students continued to visit the lantern exhibition in Yuntai Garden. The theme of the lantern exhibition combined with the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. It launched three exhibition areas including the "70 years of Development, and A New Era of Booming", the "Beautiful Homeland of Magnificent Mountains and Rivers", and the "Wishes to Our Motherland and a New Era for the Beautiful Guangdong ". Watching the lantern exhibition enabled the international students to experience not only the traditional Chinese culture, but also China's 70 years of development and changes.

Mr. Zeng Jiajin, the deputy Dean of SIE, attended the event in person, as the Chinese and English interpreter. The international students all expressed that the event was very interesting and meaningful, which enhanced their understanding of China and Guangzhou City. This event is also an important move for SIE to further enhance the influence of elite education.

GPNU International Students Attending the Fourth China-Africa Youth Festival

On the evening of September 3, “the Fourth China-Africa Youth Festival”, jointly organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Guangdong Provincial Government, was held at the China Hotel with the theme of "Building dreams of the youth and creating a new era of China-Africa relations". School of International Education (SIE) organized 20 international students from 12 countries including Sierra Leone, Congo, Republic of Congo, Niger, Côte d'Ivoire, Burundi and Nigeria to participate in the event, and they gathered with nearly 100 youth representatives from 51 African member states of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) to discuss about the youth development.

The event was not only a gala, but also a grand gathering of China-Africa cultural exchanges, where there were traditional Yao dances reflecting the profound Chinese culture, Chinese Kung Fu, Tai Chi, paper-cut Cantonese opera, as well as passionate African dances. The international students of GPNU had a friendly exchange with other youth representatives and actively participated in the performance of Tai Chi, Chinese Kung Fu, traditional Yao dances and other traditional cultural performances. The gala, which lasted for more than two hours, achieved the goal of learning about China and promoting the friendship, also enriched the spare time life of the international students.

After the gala, the international students who participated in the event expressed their willingness to pass on the baton of promoting China-Africa friendship and to inject new momentum into the development of the cultural and people-to-people exchanges between China and Africa.

SIE Organizes International Students to Visit Guangdong Science Center

Organized by the School of International Education (SIE), 45 international students from more than 30 countries studying in China visited the Guangdong Science Center on the afternoon of June 6 to gain a deeper insight into the scientific and technological development of China.

After listening to the introduction on the status, functions and main exhibitions of the Guangdong Science Center, the international students mainly visited and experienced the Transportation World, Space Dreams, Green Homeland and other exhibition areas. In the Transportation World area, they learned about how the evolution of science and technology has promoted the evolution of transportation and basic principles of transportation means, and experienced the vehicle 360° rolling experiment, autonomous driving technology, driving simulation and other technologies. In the Space Dreams area, they explored human's history of flight, understanding of the universe and efforts in space exploration. They also learned about the brilliant achievements made by China's space industry, which are highlighted in the area, and experienced trainings for astronauts, weightlessness, etc. In the green homeland area, they experienced the destructive force and the effect on human of the force 10 typhoon. Finally, the students watched the 4D movie Golden Monkeys - Sichuan Snub-nosed Monkeys.

The visit, which lasted more than three hours, was so impressive that the international students were reluctant to leave. They expected to pay a longer visit again with their families and admired that the Chinese people have such a high-level scientific experience and popularization venue.

The Guangdong Science Center is a large-scale comprehensive science popularization venue as a part of the implementation of the strategies "Develop Guangdong through Science and Education" and "Powerful Province in Talent" and for the improvement of scientific and cultural quality of people. The center features four functions of scientific education, scientific and technological achievements display, international academic exchanges and science-oriented tourism. Certified by Guinness World Records and awarded the title of "the largest science museum/science center" in the world, it is a representative project of China green buildings, an important display window for scientific and technological achievements of Guangdong Province and a landmark of Guangzhou.

SIE Organizes International Students to Experience Traditional Customs of the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival

To implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's instruction on making excellent Chinese traditional culture popular around the world, the School of International Education (SIE) arranged for 26 international students from 13 countries to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival at the Guangzhou Shennong Caotang Museum on June 7.

The students visited the Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum of the Guangzhou Shennong Caotang Museum, learned about the legends of "Shennong Tasted Hundreds of Herbs" and "He tu Luo shu", explored the Chinese herbal medicine garden which boasted 1,000 kinds of herbs, and listened to the introduction on the effects and characteristics of Chinese herbal medicines. When visiting the Memorial Hall of Tu Youyou, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, the students expressed their admiration and gratitude to Tu Youyou for her remarkable contribution of the discovery of artemisinin which can significantly reduce the mortality rate of malaria, marveling at her contributions to human beings.

The international students then experienced the custom of the Dragon Boat Festival. They learned how to make rice dumplings and mosquito repellent sachets, and experienced the plant printing and dyeing. Some of them also experienced the moxibustion therapy which has been included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO.

It was coincident that they met Chen Xinzi, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yang Zhenhai, the successor of Inner Canon of Huangdi, and Li Wenhai, vice president of CP Group during the visit. They praised and affirmed the efforts made by the school in spreading the culture of traditional Chinese medicine to the world, guided the experience activities for the students, and took a group photo with the students.

The students said that this kind of activity is meaningful, offering them an opportunity to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival in a special way, learn about the origin and development of the Chinese culture, and understand the Chinese philosophy. They have benefited a lot from the activity and expect to participate in more culture experience activities

SIE Participates in CCTF Campaign for the Convoy Plan

On May 17, 2019, School of International Education (SIE) of Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University (GPNU), as recommended by the International Exchange and Cooperation Office of Guangdong Provincial Education Department, participated in the promotional campaign for The Convoy Plan of China Children and Teenagers’ Fund (CCTF) carried out in the Shimen Middle School, Nanhai District, Foshan. This campaign was themed with “Cultural Confidence and Talent Convoy”.

The activity was in forms of interview and interaction, focused on cultural confidence. The leaders in charge of the SIE and Guangdong Humanity and Social Science Popularization Base gave speeches starting with the cultural elements of Foshan’s Nanhai District, introducing Lingnan culture and its characteristics, Xiqiao Mountain (known as the ‘lighthouse of pearl river civilization’ and the origin of its reputation as the ‘famous mountain of neo-confucianism in south Guangdong.’ Combining with overseas study experience and years of experience in international dissemination of Lingnan culture, they interpreted the charm of culture and its role in intercultural communication through vivid cases, strengthening the middle school students’ cultural confidence and improving their international communication ability. The interview featured a lively atmosphere. Starting from some cultural elements around the middle school students, it brought them a strong sense of identity and intimacy and meanwhile made them feel the broad and profound culture and the importance of learning and understanding it deeply.

This campaign was organized by CCTF and Beijing Television Station, supported by Guangdong Provincial Education Department, the Foreign Affairs Office of Guangdong Provincial People’s Government and the Consular Protection Center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and fully recorded on film by Beijing Television Station.

Reportedly: with support from Guangdong Provincial Education Department, The Convoy Plan, a public welfare program jointly launched by CCTF and other relevant organizations was officially initiated in Guangdong on April 23. As a program helping talent development in the new era, the Plan is aimed to promote cultural confidence, escorting teenage students studying abroad and securing their growth and success through public welfare projects such as safety convoy, service convoy, culture convoy and talent convoy.

International Students Score High at Campus Football Culture Festival 2019
Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University (GPNU) held its Campus Football Culture Festival during March and April, 2019. The festival featured 7 main activities, i.e. men’s 7-player football league, women’s 5-player football league, men’s and women’s carrying ball round the pole and shooting, men’s long-kick competition, school football baby selection, football story collection, and football culture photography campaign. The School of International Education (SIE) sent 15 international students, who came from 8 countries, to participate in the men’s 7-player football league.

With excellent strength, the international student team of SIE defeated all opponents during 5 matches, i.e. the 3 group matches, quarter-final elimination match and semi-final match, achieving complete victory.

Finally, SIE won the champion of men’s 7-player football league, with its total score ranking No.5 at the football culture festival. Loemaise, from the Republic of Congo, was honored the most valuable player award and the outstanding athlete award. Boloka, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo , won the best shooter award. And Jason, from the Republic of Congo, became the best goalkeeper.
