On December 18, our elementary students proudly presented a delightful mini-production of The Lion King. The journey began back in October with auditions.  The main cast—composed of students from Grades 1 through 5—dedicated countless lunch hours for rehearsals. Their hard work paid off with a stunning 30-minute performance inspired by the beloved Disney classic.

Each grade had the opportunity to shine with a special song performance. The grand finale brought all grades together in a joyful celebration that filled the theatre with energy and pride.

A huge thank-you to organizers Mr. Nick Awat, Ms. Emily Vincent, Ms. Laurel Bergsma, and Mr. Jonathan Mitchell for their care, guidance and dedication to excellence. It was truly a magical evening that showcased the students’ creativity, teamwork, and love for the performing arts.

On Tuesday, December 16th, Clifford International School hosted its first Winter Prom. Students arrived dressed to impress, wearing stunning formal dresses and sharp suits. All ticket proceeds were reinvested into the event itself, allowing for beautiful room decorations, as well as delicious food and drinks.

As guests entered, they were greeted by a sparkling scene of shiny streamers, dangling snowflakes, and strobe lights. The energy in the room was palpable from start to finish. The evening was made unforgettable thanks to the many people who contributed to its success. A heartfelt thank you to the teacher organizers for their hard work, as well as to the staff who supervised and joined in the fun. The DJ at the event was outstanding and kept the dance floor pumping, with a mix of requests ranging from Christmas classics to modern favourites.

Students enjoyed delicious food, sparkling apple juice, a popular Polaroid photo station and photo booth, and even bubbles that livened up the dance floor. The crowd cheered as a Prom King and Queen were crowned, and were thoroughly impressed by some of our teachers’ dancing skills. With plans already underway to move prom to the spring next year—and hopes of welcoming 75 students—this first prom has set a wonderful tradition in motion at the school.

What happens when you mix math, design, and a little friendly competition? Our Grade 8 students just found out in an exciting, hands-on project that brought the concepts of rates, percentages, and geometry to life—through RACE CARS! This wasn’t just a math lesson; it was a full-scale design challenge. The mission? To build the fastest race car possible, then use math to calculate speed, distance, and real-world costs.

The high school choir’s journey towards their winter holiday performances is a testament to dedication, teamwork, and artistic expression. For months leading up to the shows, choir members gather during choir class, their excitement palpable as they dive into a rigorous practice schedule.

Under the guidance of their passionate choir director, they work tirelessly to master complex harmonies and learn a diverse repertoire that ranges from classic carols to contemporary holiday hits. Each rehearsal is a blend of laughter, challenges, and bursts of creativity, fostering a sense of camaraderie among the singers.

As performance day approaches, the choir refines their skills further, focusing on dynamics and stage presence. The culmination of their hard work is not just in the songs they perform but in the way they connect with the audience, spreading joy and warmth through music. Their dedication transforms into unforgettable performances, leaving lasting memories for both the choir and their listeners, celebrating the spirit of the season through their collective talent and passion.

Our first Terry Tuesday took place last week. Terry Tuesday is a day when students can wear their Terry Fox T-shirt to school once a month. This year’s Terry Fox Run & Roll was very successful. Our Clifford International School community raised 12,168 RMB for the Terry Fox Cancer Research Foundation. Our school goal was 10,000 RMB, so we clearly exceeded it. CIS appreciates the support from our students and parents for this important cause.

On October 22nd to 24th, our Grade 7–8 students travelled to Congua. Students learned to make fires, build and secure shelters, and filter water using natural materials. Students also practiced navigation and hiked across scenic hills. With the addition of kayaking,  paddle boarding, and a ping-pong competition, there was plenty of time for laughter and teamwork. This trip gave students the chance to discover their strengths while deepening friendships.

On October 20th to 22nd, our Grade 5–6 students enjoyed an unforgettable three-day field trip to Cliffhaus. The trip was filled with hands-on challenges and new experiences. Students used maps and compasses to navigate hiking routes, they learned to set up tents, and practiced outdoor living skills. Students took part in fun team games for a chance to spend a night in the tree houses. Highlights included rock climbing, exploring raw caves, and ending the day with homemade pizzas and a bonfire filled with singing, dancing, and marshmallows. Our final stop was a local tea plantation where students picked tea leaves and learned how tea is made from field to cup.

On Wednesday, October 14th, Clifford International School came together for a memorable 2nd Annual Gala Evening. The event featured performances from student musicians, our school choir, the middle school band, and the Catnip Band. Gala Evening provided an opportunity for students to share their musical gifts with the community and serves as an important platform for selecting this year’s representatives for the prestigious ISMAG (International School of Guangzhou Music Association) Piano Competition. Three performers from primary and three from secondary will be chosen to compete with students from other international schools. We are proud to continue our tradition of excellence in this competition.

On the morning of Friday, October 17, we hosted a successful Terry Fox Run & Roll. The event started with remarks from Canadian Consul General Behzad Babakhani and our school’s principal, Mr. Brown. Students from grades 1 to 12 walked to the lake and enjoyed a lively morning. Many parents and friends joined us, making it a joyful event that raised awareness about cancer by collecting donations for the Terry Fox Cancer Research Center. Thanks to T-shirt sales and donations, we’ve raised nearly 10,000 RMB so far. Final totals will be shared with students next week! Thanks to everyone who attended, bought T-shirts, or sent donations. Donations will be accepted for one more week.
