Gaoyou Middle School of Jiangsu province was founded in 1905 in the late Qing Dynasty with its original name “Zanhua School”. In 1923, the school was named as “Gaoyou County Junior Middle School”. In 1955, the school was renamed as “Gaoyou County Middle School” with its Senior Section. In 1966, the school was named as “Dong Fang Hong Middle School”, and in 1968 was again renamed as “Gaoyou County
Middle School”. In early 1991, with “the rescinding of the county and establishment of the city”, the school thus was renamed as “Gaoyou Municipal Middle School” . In 2005, with the approval of the Department of Education in Jiangsu province, the school was renamed “Gaoyou Middle School of Jiangsu province” . Gaoyou Middle School is located on the riverside of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal in the south suburban scenic area of Gaoyou, 60 km north of Yangzhou City. The school originally covered an area of 42,600 square meters (about 64 mu), which could hardly meet the needs of the development of school. Thus, in 2000, after the approval of the Gaoyou government , the school pursued a new campus. In August 2001, the entire school was removed. The new campus covers an area of 149,200 square meters (about 224 mu), with a building area of more than 68,800 square meters. It is a modern, gardenized school manifesting both its traditional style and modern consciousness, unified education and management functions, and combined building universality and individuality of the school. Gaoyou Middle School has 310 faculty members, including more than 260 full-time teachers and 72 classes with more than 4,200 students in school. On the basis of its long-term practice, Gaoyou Middle School has formed a set of distinctive teaching idea and management mode, which reflects the situation and conform the rules. With our tenet of “Found a famous Chinese school in the new century, foster high-quality citizens of the world” , with the school motto of “virtue, practice” and the school spirit of “being pragmatic, be innovative”, we adhere to the teaching idea of “ emphasizing the Priority of Ethical Education, the Principle of teaching and Training and the Basis of Educating People” and the managerial train of thought of “Education on the Whole, Teaching on Each One and Instruction on Every Steps “ in running schools. We adhere to “Scientific, Pragmatic, and Artistic Quality” as our work principle, and “Full Implementation of Fine Management Work” as our work standard. In new period, Gaoyou Middle School actively explore and establish a mode of management that is consistent with its own development needs by establishing the grade management committee, the committee of students’ dormitory management, the office of supervision, and the enrolment division. We simplify the management link, and form the module management pattern, in which each work will be taken according to the existing module, level and area. Now the school has achieved good momentum of great-leap-forward development. In the past century, Gaoyou Middle School has been fostering tens of thousands of excellent students, and from it, a number of outstanding scientists, educators, writers, artists, the army’s and social activists spring out. Among them, saint in white---doctor Wu Dengyun, senior diplomat Qin Huasun, famous writer Wang Zengqi, famous army general Zhou Erjun, Deputy Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union Zhao Houlin, Secretary of Commission of Chao Yang District of Beijing Chen Gang are the outstanding representatives. In recent years, Gaoyou Middle School has been awarded several honorable titles namely “Jiangsu provincial civilized school”, “Jiangsu Provincial Advanced School in Moral Education”, “Jiangsu provincial Advanced School in School Sports “, “Jiangsu Provincial Advanced Collective of Party Construction in Primary and Secondary schools”, “Jiangsu Provincial Advanced Health Unit”, “Jiangsu Provincial Advanced Sports School”, “Jiangsu Provincial Advanced League Committee “, “Jiangsu Provincial Experimental School of Modern Education Technology “, “Jiangsu Provincial Basic Party School “, “Jiangsu Provincial Graceful Campus”, “Jiangsu Provincial Garden Unit”, “ Jiangsu Provincial Green School”, “Jiangsu Provincial Safe Campus”, “Yangzhou Model School”, “Yangzhou Civilized Unit”, “Yangzhou Advanced School”, etc. Gaoyou Middle School has become the key subject experimental school in “eleventh five-year plan” of “National Teachers Fund”, the key experimental school of national project in Eleventh Five-year plan ----Traditional Culture and Language Teaching, and one of the high quality bases of student resource for more than ten well-known universities such including Nanjing University.
