Helping Others - Angel Boxes｜帮助他人 - 天使礼盒
As the season of giving approached, our school community came together in a spirit of generosity and compassion, rallying around the heartwarming Angel Boxes project aimed at spreading joy and warmth to the less fortunate, especially the elderly and children.
随着捐赠季节的临近，我们学校社区在慷慨和同理心的精神下聚集在一起，围绕着暖心的天使盒项目，将欢乐和温暖传递给不幸的人，特别是老人和孩子。
Our students embraced the opportunity to contribute, each bringing in an item to add to the Angel Boxes. The range of gifts was remarkable, from warm socks and fun toys to books, non-perishable food items, and personal care products. Each item was a testament to the thoughtfulness and care of our students.
学生们拥抱这次贡献的机会，每个人都带来了捐赠物品，放到天使盒子内。礼物的种类非常多，从保暖的袜子、有趣的玩具到书籍、不易腐烂的食品和个人护理产品。每件物品都表达了他们的体贴和关怀。
The school became a hub of activity as the deadline for contributions drew near. Students and teachers alike were seen dropping off their items at the class collection points, each donation adding to the growing sense of excitement and community spirit.

The assembly of the boxes was a collaborative effort led by our Parent-Teacher Association and a team of dedicated volunteers. They worked meticulously to ensure each box was filled with a variety of items, carefully packing them with love and hope. The boxes were not just gifts, they were symbols of kindness, empathy and the joy of giving.

The distribution of the boxes to Treasures of Hope (TOH), a local charity working with the less fortunate elderly and children, marked the culmination of our efforts. It was a moment of pride and fulfilment for everyone involved. Seeing the boxes being handed over to the charity was a powerful reminder of the difference we can make in the lives of others.

This initiative was more than a charity drive, it was an educational journey for our students. They learned valuable lessons about compassion, empathy and community spirit. The Angel Boxes initiative showed them the direct, positive impact they could have on someone's life, a lesson that will undoubtedly stay with them for years to come.

As we reflect on this successful endeavour, it's heartening to see how small acts of kindness can come together to make a significant difference. ASJ (Dongguan) is thrilled to share that two of our talented students were selected for the prestigious 3rd Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Primary and Secondary Students' Outstanding Performances. Their exceptional performances were showcased on stage at the esteemed Xinghai Conservatory of Music on 17th December, leaving the audience in awe of their confidence and elegance. We are immensely proud of our students and their remarkable achievements, which reflect the excellence of our institution. Congratulations to our outstanding performers!

The performance was an awe-inspiring showcase of strength and bravery, leaving the audience spellbound by the sheer power of the music. International Tertiary Education Expo｜“莞通万里”国际专上教育展览今日开幕！
After months of preparation and anticipation, the International Tertiary Education Expo in Dongguan 2023, organised by the China-Hong Kong Culture Exchange Association, was officially opened at ASJ (Dongguan) on the 15th of December.
历经数月的筹备和期待，由香港慈善机构中港文化交流促进会主办的2023“莞通万里”国际专上教育展览，于12月15日在东莞暨大港澳子弟学校正式开幕。
This event was honoured to have: Mr. Ruilang LIN, Director of Gaobu Education Management Centre; Mr. Dapeng ZHANG, Director of the Office of Basic Education of Jinan University; Mr. Gengtian CAI, General Manager of Jinan Education Investment and Development Co., Ltd.; Ms. Ruiping SITU, Chairlady of the CUHK School Heads Alumni Association; Mr. Jonathan LAI, Chief Principal of ASJ (Dongguan); as well as representatives of more than 30 participating universities with us on this special occasion.
东莞市高埗镇教育管理中心主任林锐朗先生、暨南大学基础教育办公室主任张大朋先生、暨南教育投资发展有限公司总经理蔡耿添先生、香港中文大学校友校长会主席司徒瑞萍女士、东莞暨大港澳子弟学校赖炳华先生以及三十多所参展单位的代表等出席了开幕仪式。
In addition to more than 30 world-renowned schools and professional institutions from the Greater Bay Area of China, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Switzerland, Ireland, and the U.K., the exhibition also invited several authorities in the education field including DSE Curriculum experts to help students, parents, and community members gain a greater understanding of international tertiary education opportunities.
本次展览除了有三十余所来自中国粤港澳大湾区、加拿大、澳大利亚、新加坡、瑞士、爱尔兰、以及英国的世界名校和专业升学机构参展以外，还邀请了教育界多位权威人士和DSE课程专家到场开设讲座，希望东莞及大湾区的学生、家长和公众能够通过本次展览获取信息、开拓视野、增进对国际专上教育的了解。
As one of the co-organisers of this event, it was important to ASJ (Dongguan) that this Expo was a platform for international education exchange, aligning with ASJ’s education philosophy, the DSE curriculum, and the diverse and inclusive educational characteristics of the Greater Bay Area.

Primary Years Sports Day｜小学部运动会
The ASJ Primary students kicked off December with their annual Sports Day, which was a highly anticipated event that had been months in the making. All of our K3 to G6 students had worked tirelessly alongside Mr. Chris and Mr. Don to develop their skills in preparation for this day.
ASJ小学部一年一度的运动会在12月拉开了序幕，这是一场备受期待的活动，对此大家已经酝酿了几个月。所有K3到G6的学生在Mr. Chris和Mr. Don的帮助下勤奋地训练体育技能，为这一天做准备。
As educators, we understand the importance of participation in sports and physical activities as essential for children's overall growth and development. Not only does it help them build strong bones, improve their coordination and develop social skills, but it also promotes a healthy lifestyle and supports cognitive function, focus, and stress reduction.
作为教育工作者，我们深刻认识到体育运动对儿童的全面成长和发展至关重要。它不仅能帮助他们强健骨骼，提高协调能力和发展社交技能，而且还能促进健康的生活方式，提高认知技能，集中注意力，减轻压力。
During the Sports Day, students participated in both track and field events, showcasing their strength, agility, coordination, and sportsmanship as they competed for individual and collective house points. The races included hurdles, relay races, sprints, egg & spoon, skipping and long-distance, which were all represented on the track. Meanwhile, on the field, students engaged in various physical activities such as javelin throw, long jump, shot put, discus throw, football target and obstacle course.
在运动会期间，学生们参加了田径项目，展示了力量、敏捷性、协调性和体育精神，并且争夺个人和集体的分数。比赛项目包括跨栏、接力赛、短跑、鸡蛋和勺子、跳绳和长跑。同时，在操场上，学生们进行了标枪、跳远、铅球、掷铁饼、足球靶、障碍赛等体育活动。
Competition for both individual and House teams was fierce, but in the end, it was the Centaurs who marginally clinched the overall victory and were named the Sports Day Champions, with Phoenix coming in second. Well done, Centaurs!

Participation in sports day brings immense value to students. Everyone is a winner by learning important life skills such as teamwork, resilience, and perseverance. Overall it was an exciting and memorable day that highlighted the importance of sports and physical education in our students' lives.

Fun with Chemistry - DSE Department ｜ 化学趣味课堂：盐水动力小车竞赛
Students in Grade 11 have been learning about Chemical Cell - powerful batteries which can power cars. Students discovered that a chemical cell's main parts consist of a positive electrode, a negative electrode, electrolyte and connecting wires.
In a saltwater car, the positive electrode is a graphite slice, the negative electrode is a magnesium slice, and the electrolyte is saltwater (sodium chloride solution). When the circuit is connected, the magnesium metal loses electrons, which travel through the electrolyte to the graphite slice. Around the graphite, H+ ions in the solution gain electrons and become hydrogen gas. The flow of electrons creates an electric current in the circuit that powers the car.

With that understanding, students worked in groups to assemble a model saltwater car in the lab. students were provided with tires, an engine, two electrodes (a metal slice of magnesium and a graphite slice) and a plastic cup. Working together, they were able to build their car before successfully running the car by adding a little saltwater in the cup. Once completed, the teams successfully had a test run to the cheers of their teammates.

After the initial test run, students brainstormed how to speed up the car’s acceleration. A race was then held between the teams, and the students discovered how to change the factors to optimise the speed of the car:
- The concentration of the electrolyte
- The surface area of the electrodes
- The temperature of the electrolyte
- Volume of the electrolyte
经历首次试跑后，学生们集思广益如何提升小车的速度。然后，小组之间进行了一场比赛，学生们发现了可以通过改变这些因素来优化小车的速度:

The race came to an end with two teams reaching a time of 28 seconds in the 3-meter race. The winning team explained:
"We used warmer water to dissolve the salt, less water to reduce the load, and we extended one electrode to be twice the size to increase the surface area of the reaction."
在3米赛跑中，有两组以28秒的成绩赢得了比赛。获胜的队伍解释道:
“我们用更高温度的水来溶解盐，用更少的水来减轻小车的负荷，将一块电极延展至两倍大小以增加反应表面积。”
Through this simple hands-on experiment, students developed greater understanding of the ‘rate of chemical reaction’ and how an environmentally friendly car works while discovering the elements of a chemical cell. This activity helped to reinforce the importance of teamwork and realise that chemistry is not complicated but is fun!
通过这个简单的动手实验，学生们在发现化学电池的元素的同时，也对“化学反应速率”和环保汽车的工作原理有了更深入的了解。这次活动让同学们认识到团队合作的重要性，并认识到化学并不复杂，且很有趣!
