What better way to welcome in the warmer Beijing weather with an evening of wine tasting!
At Dragon Phoenix, our Spring into Summer event gave guests the chance to taste crisp, clean whites and light, dry reds from all over the world - styles which are now beginning to trend strongly in China.
Thank you to all the importers who helped us bring these wines to Beijing, and all who came along to join in on the fun.

Celebrations and smiles in the London Sun!
It was such a pleasure to attend the graduation ceremony of our fantastic WSET Level 4 Diploma students in London last week. Every year the event brings together wine educators and enthusiasts from all over the world in celebration of those at the forefront of the wine industry. We were especially excited to see Dragon Phoenix student Yin Dongxue 殷冬雪, CEO of the Mary Shelly Sweet Wine Group, be awarded the John Avery Vintners’ Bursary for achieving outstanding results. Congratulations to all students involved, and best of luck in your future endeavours!

In April, Dragon Phoenix’s Fongyee Walker MW hosted a masterclass in DAOU wines for a large group of Chinese wine enthusiasts. Fongyee guided the group through the 9 selected wines, including DAOU’s world-class vintage Bordeaux-style Cabernet Sauvignon, Soul of a Lion.
The event was a valuable opportunity for DAOU to showcase their success to the Chinese market and for participants to be among the first to taste these wines in China. We wish DAOU all the best in the exciting developing Chinese market.

Magnums Around the World Dinner was a special event for Dragon Phoenix, deepening our students' understanding of how the world of fine wine can be paired with some of China's best Shandong cuisine.
Fongyee Walker MW and Edward Ragg MW delved into how ten magnums from ten different countries with a vintage span of over 25 years had developed and expressed themselves in this format, discussing how magnums allow the flavours to develop slowly and how this format benefits collectors. Guests came away with a deeper understanding of the relationship between format and fine wine, the expertise of our MWs at food and wine matching, and how well Chinese traditional cuisine can pair with global fine wines. A delicious result for all!

At the end of March, Herr Busch from Weingut Clemens Busch, along with Fongyee Walker MW, did a tasting across various Grosses Gewäches to a packed classroom. Riesling is one of the quickest growing grape varieties amongst Chinese consumers. Here, there is no need for a 'renaissance' of Riesling with bulk German wine heritage we see in western markets, because most consumers come to German Rieslings through drinking VDP wines.
Riesling has a premium image, and the range of styles has allowed Chinese students at Dragon Phoenix to become avid fans of all levels of sweetness at the highest quality. This really shone through during the Clemens Busch tasting. The engagement level was super high with many students becoming passionate about picking between wines from the red, blue, and grey slates. The experience proved to be a fascinating deep dive into the Mosel terroir for Chinese wine lovers to explore.

Bringing together East and West through wine is what we do - Fongyee Walker MW hosted a tasting of nine Chinese wines for the Royal Asiatic Society of Beijing, introducing a wide variety of Chinese wine regions to people passionate about Chinese culture, learning and philosophy.
The tasting ranged from Tibet (Petit Mont 寸山) and Gansu (Ease Estate 自在酒庄) to Hebei (Chapter and Verse 诗百篇), Ningxia (Mountain Wave Winery 海悦仁和酒庄) and Xinjiang (Puchang Vineyard 蒲昌酒庄), finishing with a traditional Chinese Rice wine from Mansong (Mansong Reserve慢宋黄酒).
A terrific evening was had by all as they enjoyed local snacks from each wine region with their wine. We at Dragon Phoenix are always working hard to introduce new wines to new consumers!

On top of 4 successful Chengdu Wine Fair masterclasses, Fongyee Walker MW also hosted a livestream with Casella Family Wines, a business forum on New Zealand and two wine dinners.
The first featured new-wave Castel products such as no-low and XXL highlighting new consumption patterns in China, with a lot of interest from the distributors that attended and a lot of discussion about how the trade in China is shifting towards greater diversity.
The other showcased the Peter Lehmann brand for distributors and horeca, part of Dragon Phoenix's work with Casella Family Wines. And as part of this, Fongyee sat down with John and Frank Casella and James Wilson to livestream a lively interview telling the story of their iconic Australian brands to a wide Chinese audience online.
With the growing professionalisation of the Chinese wine trade, Fongyee hosted a panel of industry experts for New Zealand Wine Growers to share insights on the growing Chinese market for New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and such light bodied crisp whites.
This year, the Chengdu Wine Fair showed a growing awareness of the changes in the Chinese wine trade and how to enable it to grow in a sustainable and successful way. Here's to next year!
