The new HSK 3 has FEWER questions than the old one. So why is everyone calling it harder? 🤔

From July 1, 2026, the most popular Chinese language exam in the world changes — dropping from 80 questions to 70. But here's the catch: the parts they removed were the easy ones.

What's actually changing:

📚 Vocabulary: 600 → 1,000 words (+67%)
✏️ Writing: no more word-rearrangement — you now compose sentences from a picture + a single word
🎧 Listening: True/False section removed (the one teachers always said you could pass by catching keywords)
🗣️ HSK Speaking now mandatory — you can't register for the written test alone anymore

The "easier" item types are gone. What's left tests real Chinese, not test-taking technique.

If you're preparing right now:

✅ Close to passing? Take the old version before July.
✅ 3+ months out? Switch to new format prep — your existing study mostly still applies, and it's better preparation for HSK 4 anyway.
✅ Already have an old HSK 3 certificate? It's still valid forever — no need to retake.

Starting July 1, 2026, the new HSK 3 exam will test 500 words instead of 300. And 255 of those words are completely new — they weren't on the old syllabus at any level.
