胡同漫游大挑战 ~MiB Hutong Hop Challenge Recap
🀄️Last weekend we said goodbye to our fall students after a rich and full semester together. But we still have so many great moments and successes to share from the semester so stay tuned as we recap a few highlights 🀄️ One collective favorite among our activities this fall was our Hutong hop challenge where we joined with roommates, local families, teachers and local business owners to explore the heart of Beijing.
The hutongs are the one story maze like neighborhoods which represent still today the bounds of Beijing’s imperial city wall limits. These alley and courtyard based stone winding communities are at the heart of the city center, cultural heritage and make up the spirit of old Beijing. Iconic of the city’s history, architecture and contemporary social life, the hutongs represent where old meets new, where you can find a game of Chinese chess or Hawthorne candy outside a chic new coffee shop built into the old streets. Bars, restaurants and newly renovated apartments alongside old, restored courtyards, street barber shops and seamstresses. To lose yourself in the maze of these streets scattered across the city is about as local as central Beijing can get.
In this hop our students split into groups and were led, clue by clue, to discover the areas around Shichahai. They ventured from local art and performance spaces - exploring Chinese craft and heritage - to the grocery store to make a hutong carry out delivery and eventually to our end gathering point for trivia and dinner. We loved bringing so many people together (even an old alum!) and supporting Beijing businesses along the way 🀄️

工艺、非遗、传承:Positioned on China’s southwestern most border with Myanmar, Vietnam and Laos, in Yunnan you will find a unique blend of ethnic and folk cultures and crafts as well as remnants of the trade connecting historic pathways from the Tea Horse to Silk Roads.
During this fall’s Yunnan seminar students also engaged in rich inquiry exploring the intersections of ethnicity, heritage, commercialization and cultural preservation. Where do the present and tradition meet? And what does sustainable development look like in spaces where cultural heritage and contemporary society coexist in tension daily?
1-7📷 制作花草只 Traditional Paper Making: Known for its flower industry, hand made paper with flowers and other natural elements mixed in has become a popular craft and symbol of Yunnan.
8-12📷 喜洲大理与工艺 Craftsmanship in Dali and Xizhou: Xizhou’s artisanal heritage center also features a museum with the origins of the regions most famous handcrafts from silver and copper work to pottery, wood carving and paper crafts. Just north of Dali in Lijiang the Naxi people’s dongba culture was one of the first in the region to use paper as part of their script snd religious practice.
13📷 喜洲粑粑 Xizhou bread making, AKA Xizhou pizza! Students baked and tasted sweet and savory breads in this workshop hosted by our hosts at the
14📷 白族三道茶:Students experiencing the three course tea ceremony of Dali’s Bai ethnicity. Another tradition representing local social life and values through food and drink blending natural elements from green tea and honey to Sichuan peppercorn and Yunnan’s goat cheese. “先苦后甜三回味” ~
15-18📷 大理白族建筑 Traditional Bai courtyards made in local marble. Many ethnic groups in Yunnan were impacted by missionary work in the 19th and 20th centuries. In Dali you can visit one of the local Bai Catholic Churches still remaining in the area, combing Christian and local motifs.

《从一种语言到另一种语言的翻译》Examining Beijing’s art scene at 798.
Last week, as part of their coursework, students visited 798 and Beijing’s UCCA where Lawerence Weiner’s exhibit, “A Pursuit of Happiness”, was on display. The exhibit “invited viewers to experience and explore the sculptural qualities of language” and evoked thinking on language, translation and the role and significance of international art exchange. In addition to this visit, students spent the afternoon exploring galleries of their choice and observing how art is manifesting within in popular spaces in Beijing, examining relationships between creativity, authenticity and the commercialization and capitalization of art and culture in contemporary society. 《不管什么流派我要自成一派 ::798路上看到的一句话》

举头望明月! Mid Autumn Festival Fun 🌖 Last weekend we celebrated the Mid Autumn Festival with a feast 🥟 🥟 🥟 Roommates, teachers and students wrapped dumplings with campus coffee shop owner and staff, sharing together also in a whole array of other stirfrys and goods!
I’m continued celebration of the holiday students played board games and watched the new Chinese hit animation film Chang-An. Recounting the story of Li Bai and Gao Shi’s friendship, the film incorporates over 70 traditional Tang poems and weaves in the stories of other great icons such as Du Fu, The Eight Immortals of the Wine Cup and more. A perfect cap to the weekend. Wishing a happy autumn to all!

人在画中游:Continued pictures from an early weekend at Beijing’s Summer Palace. Just north of campus on a rainy day, we boated with students from nearby Zizhuyuan park all the way up the 琨御河(Kunyu Canal) to the palace’s southern gate. The guide explained to us that China’s Dowager Emperess Cixi would boat the same route from the city center’s Imperial Palace to her summer getaway. Originally developed in the 1750’s by Qing emperor Qianlong, the palace architecture and grounds are known across the country and the world as emblematic of Chinese garden design.
# # to our roommates and students for all the amazing photos, we’ve got some artists in the palace # # #
