Mandarinclick Client Interview

Name: Janice

1. How did Mandarinclick help you?

I needed an internship in Beijing, but could not find anything except for teaching. Mandarinclick has arranged me interview opportunities in international trade. Eventually, I choose an internship in a wine company.

2. Could you describe your job/internship position?

The wine company I work for exports Chinese wine to Europe. I work as assistant manager at the marketing department. Main tasks were blogging, writing newsletters, writing articles, designing advertisements. This is my first internship and I am enjoying my time a lot!

3. Why did you decide to start your career in China?

The growing power of China attracted me. China has the future! Also, I have family in Beijing, so it was an easy choice!

4. Could you describe your opinion on living in China? What do you like/dislike?

I speak Chinese fluently so surviving China is no problem! I dislike the air pollution that hits Beijing once in a while, but I love Chinese people, food and culture.

5. How do you spend your free time in China?

On Saturday I teach at a Chinese primary school. I also spend time swimming and visiting family.

6. Do you like working in China? Would you consider a long term career here?

Yes, if the economic situation continues to be favorable I hope to obtain a long term career in China. Actually, I hope to obtain a job in my current company after I graduate.

7. Do you have some tips for foreigners coming to China?

Make sure to communicate with locals. They are very hospitable and will be very friendly to you. Also, make sure you do not eat too much food from street vendors. It is delicious, but can be polluted.

8. What is your opinion on Mandarinclick’s services?

I think Mandarinclick is a great company. The staff is friendly and they were always ready to help. I have attended several events organized by them and in this way I got to know a lot iof interesting people!

Ariana from Italy has succesfully completed her internship in Shanghai. Underneath, an interview about her China experience. Check www.mandarinclick.com for the full version!

1. Could you describe your job/internship position?

I have worked in an agricultural trade firm, selling Dutch, American and Australian cattle feed in China. I have worked in the marketing department with one Chinese, one Dutch and one German colleague. During my internship I have analyzed the differences between social media marketing in China and Western Europe.

2. Why did you decide to start your career in China?

I am studying International Business, and as part of this program, I had to do an internship abroad. China seemed an amazing opportunity: not only does it have a booming economy, but also an ancient and interesting culture.

3. Do you have some tips for foreigners coming to China?

Yes, get Wechat! Wechat is like an improved version of Whatsapp. You can use it for calling, texting, ordering taxis, paying restaurant bills, receiving salary and so on. Every person in China has Wechat. You will love it!

4. What is your opinion on Mandarinclick’s services?

So nice. They did not only arrange me a perfect internship, but they also helped me getting to know Chinese culture. It was a great help that I was assigned a ‘buddy,’ a Chinese girl (Amy) who helped me with all kinds of practical matters (buying prepaid electricity, a Chinese phone card, talking to taxi-drivers, party etc). We became good friends and next year she will visit me in Verona!

Sunday September 27 was not only mid autumn festival, but also the day on which the seminar 'Job Searching in China' took place. The event took place in the Chaoyangmen Youth Community Center located next to the Mandarinclick office, and was visited by around 20 visitors. We have welcomed a number of (previous) clients, students, Chinese interestees and young professionals. The main topic of discussion was how to find an internship/job in Beijing. Our speaker, Mr Husson, first talked about statistics about foreign workers in Beijing, and then explained how foreigners present themselves to the Chinese companies. He explained what Chinese employers find important, and how adapt to Chinese working ethics. All in all, he provided a solid seminar, covering the entire spectrum of job searching in Beijing.

Moritz came to Mandarinclick last year with a request for a 6 month position in the Chinese education industry. We had a lot of fun with Moritz during his stay in Beijing and he will be missed. Underneath, an interview about his China experience.

1. How did Mandarinclick help you?

I am majoring English in Germany and want to become an ESL-teacher. To gain hands-on experience I decided going to teach in China for 6 months. However, finding a solid position in China is not easy when being abroad. My friend recommended to contact Mandarinclick for help. They have arranged me a teaching job at one of the top educational firms in Beijing. Furthermore, they have helped me with my visa and arranged me a 24 hours available contact person. This person (thank you Terri!!) helped me with so many things: explaining taxi-drivers were to go, explaining me cultural differences between Chinese and Western students, settling a separate visa for a Thailand trip, and so on!

2. Could you describe your opinion on living in China? What do you like/dislike?

The people here are extremely friendly and China is very safe. Furthermore, there are a lot of things to do in and around Beijing. I have visited most of the hotspots (i.e. Summer Palace, Great Wall, Forbidden City) and liked riding my bike through the Hutongs (Alley ways). I also joined a football club right in the beginning of my internship, so I immediately made many foreign friends. What do I dislike about China? I dislike I had to go back to Germany!

Mandarinclick has helped Talat with an internet engineering internship in an IT company at Zhongguancun, Beijing. He has successfully transferred from an intern to a full-time employee. He is happy, so we are happy! Underneath, an interview with Talat:

1.How did Mandarinclick help you?

At first I totally lost my mind. I couldn’t speak Mandarin, and I knew nothing about the Chinese market. Mandarinclick provided me with a Chinese language course and helped me find an internship opportunity that met all my requirements.

2. Could you describe your job/internship position?

My major was Software Engineering in both undergraduate and graduate school, so I asked Mandarinclick to find a job related to IT. My work was quite basic in the beginning, but now I am project manager.

3. Why did you decide to start your career in China?

I never went abroad until I came to China for an exchange program 3 years ago. I was always fascinated by Chinese culture. It is the curiosity that drove me to decide to work in China. I wanted to experience the differences between India and China, two eastern countries with a huge population.

4. What is your opinion on Mandarinclick’s services?

They are professional. They did not only help me find job position, but also helped me with your life and work in China. I came to them whenever I had problems, and they are always patient.
