“When I came to China, I did not know what to expect. I was both excited and nervous. The China I had in mind was completely different than the China I was met with. I came to Beijing, and while knowing that Beijing was a modern and fast city, I still assumed I will see old China, run down streets and so on. I was wrong. The modernity and mixture of architecture took me by surprise. The amount of other foreigners in Beijing was another pleasant surprise, you really are not alone here. I have met friends from all over the world, friends that I will have forever. One thing you quickly learn as a foreigner in China is there is never a dull day. There is something to do for everyone.”
“Teaching English has been a rewarding experience. Some kids have a basic understanding and vocabulary whereas other kids have never had contact with a foreigner outside a television set so it is always interesting to see their reactions. What I really enjoyed is seeing their English improve daily. They learn from you through sings, stories, lessons and games as well as imitate you, which is always interesting. This has truly been one of the mist rewarding experiences I have ever encountered.”
“What to say about China? There is so much to say. Of course there is the culture shock when first moving here, coming from Toronto, I thought I was used to the business and hustle and bustle of a metropolitan city. Beijing is that times 10. After the first few weeks, the city started to settle with me. It’s big but convenient, everywhere is accessible by subway. The people are great, everyone wants to talk to you and find out about you, where you are from, how long you have been in China, what you do in China, etc. Working as an ESL teacher is a challenge, but a great one. I have learned to think on my feet and come with creative ways to teach. I feel like my public speaking has improved and the best part of working with mainly Chinese natives at the school is I learned some Mandarin.”
