School is reopening soon… what do teachers think ?

Minister Nalova Lyonga has revealed some imminent innovations meant to modernize secondary education in Cameroon. While launching the 2025/2026 school year today, she revealed MINESEC plans to ensure at least every school has a digital board to facilitate teaching this year. She also plans to introduce the “intelligent classroom”, where all benches in schools are embedded with computers. Children won't need to carry books to school as every lesson will be on their computer.

What do you think about these innovations? How feasible can they be in a context where electricity is yet to reach many communities and several government schools lack a computer laboratory?

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐨𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐋𝐓 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐬: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐦𝐦𝐚 𝐌𝐨𝐣𝐨𝐤𝐨 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐞!

Get ready for an inspiring journey, because Emma Mojoko Evele's electrifying story is not just about her career; it’s a full-blown supernova of passion, resilience, and impact!

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞
Let’s go back to 1990. Fresh out of high school, Emma stepped into ENS Bambili, unaware that she was beginning a journey that would redefine English Language Teaching (ELT) in Cameroon and beyond. Fast forward 31 years, and her story reflects unwavering dedication and transformative leadership.

By 1994, armed with a DIPES 1, she began her teaching career at GSS Tinto, Mamfe, in Manyu Division—a real baptism by fire. Imagine a school with just three classrooms where academics were overshadowed by hunting and fishing, and resources were minimal. Frustration was palpable, but then a spark ignited. Just two months into her career, she attended a SWATE (South West Association of Teachers of English) seminar in Kumba, which changed everything.

𝐒𝐖𝐀𝐓𝐄: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝
This was more than just a seminar; it was a revelation. Emma’s potential was quickly recognized as she was elected Vice Secretary General and became immersed in a community of seasoned educators. Here, the mantra "Iron Sharpens Iron" was not just a saying; it was a way of life. She absorbed knowledge and honed her teaching skills, and by 1996, she was presenting and sharing her insights, becoming a driving force in divisional and regional ELT development.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐬 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐬
Emma isn’t just a teacher; she is a master networker. Her proactive approach caught the attention of Regional Pedagogic Inspectors, who recognized her talent. She has co-authored several English and Literature textbooks used in Cameroon, Ghana, and Kenya, including noteworthy titles such as:
- 𝑮𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒅 𝑬𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒉
- 𝑴𝒐𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑶𝒏
- 𝑩𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒌𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉
- 𝑨𝒅𝒗𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒅 𝑳𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒍 𝑬𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒉 𝑳𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒖𝒂𝒈𝒆
- 𝑻𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉 𝑬𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒉; 𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏 𝑪𝒍𝒊𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆

Let’s not forget "𝑺𝒑𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅," a groundbreaking set of phonetic drill cards (still unpublished but legendary), designed to empower learners to conquer spelling and sight words with confidence. Throughout her career, Emma’s passion for teaching young learners and teenagers has remained central to her mission, driving her to innovate and inspire.

𝐀 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐨
Emma’s ability to connect, collaborate, and energize others is unparalleled. When CAMELTA, the umbrella association for English Language Teachers, emerged in 2001, Emma played a crucial role in bridging gaps and strengthening ELT communities across Cameroon, fostering a culture of collaboration and mutual growth. Her presentations and workshops in Mbalmayo, Menji, Bafia-Yaoundé, Bamenda, Bafoussam, Yaoundé, and Douala sparked a wave of interregional collaboration, showcasing her networking prowess.

𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐔𝐧𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡
Emma's thirst for knowledge is insatiable. In 2022, she became a SUSI alumna, studying administration and American Literature at California State University-Chico. Her academic excellence led her to receive the prestigious Hornby Award to pursue an MA in ELT with a specialization in ICT and Multimedia at the University of Warwick, one of the UK’s top universities.

Upon her return, she served as Regional Pedagogic Inspector of English in the Far North, blending rigour with empathy. At ENS Maroua, she designed inspiring courses for future teachers, later serving as the Regional Pedagogic Inspector for the Promotion of Bilingualism in the South. Emma's experience was further enriched with programs at regional Hornby schools in Libreville, Senegal, and Abidjan. Today, as Principal of GHS Great Soppo Buea, she is cultivating the next generation of changemakers.

𝐀 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫, 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫
Currently, Emma wears multiple hats:
- Secretary General of CAMELTA
- Head of the Young Learners Special Interest Group (SIG)
- Member of Africa ELTA, BAAL Language in Africa SIG, TESOL, and IATEFL
- Consultant with Transform ELT
- Strand Coordinator with TESOL
- Principal of GHS Great Soppo Buea

Emma’s contributions to international conferences are equally impressive, having presented at TESOL twice and at IATEFL four times, sharing her expertise with a global audience. She continues to inspire teachers, students, and educational leaders worldwide.

Yet, when asked about her greatest pride, she humbly replies, “Those ‘demotivated’ students from 1994? They taught me to listen first, teach second.”

Emma Mojoko Evele represents more than just a name or a teacher; she embodies a movement, a symbol of dedication, and transformative leadership. Her journey reminds us that passion when paired with purpose, can transform any classroom into a launchpad for greatness.

Meet Dr. Martina Mbayu Nana—a passionate educator, visionary leader, and relentless advocate for teacher empowerment. From her humble beginnings as a Grade Two Teacher and Grade One Teacher to earning DIPES I and II certificates, her journey embodies determination, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Dr. Mbayu Nana's profile is as multifaceted as it is inspiring. Her reputation as an exceptional educator stems not just from her professional qualifications, but also from her innate ability to adapt, learn, and grow. Her expertise in public relations, autodidactic spirit, and desire to constantly improve as a teacher has earned her deep respect among peers and students alike.

Even after retiring from formal positions, Dr. Mbayu Nana remains a powerhouse in the field of education. She is the founder and director of the 𝑮𝒍𝒐𝒃𝒂𝒍 𝑳𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒖𝒂𝒈𝒆 𝑪𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓 (𝐆𝐋𝐂)—a premier institution providing English language training solutions for individuals and organizations. In less than three years, GLC has emerged as a recognized IELTS examination venue and has hosted high-profile visitors, including the last two British High Commissioners and the British Council Directors for Sub-Saharan Africa.

𝐀 𝐏𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐋𝐓A:
Dr. Mbayu Nana's contributions to the Cameroon English Language and Literature Teachers' Association - Camelta are legendary. From 2001 to 2011, she served as Secretary General and Public Relations Officer for the Littoral Region, during which she spearheaded numerous impactful projects. These include the 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑪𝒂𝒇𝒆́ and the 𝑺𝒑𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑩𝒆𝒆 (sponsored by the American Embassy) and the 𝑪𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒏'𝒔 𝑬𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕 (in collaboration with the British Council).

Her influence in CAMELTA extends far beyond holding executive positions. As a classroom teacher, regional pedagogic inspector, and later director of GLC, she has facilitated countless teacher training sessions designed to uplift and inspire EFL (English as a Foreign Language) educators. Teachers have consistently praised her creativity and dedication, particularly her efforts to address the challenges of teaching "overcrowded classes"—a recurring issue in many schools.

One of her students aptly described her as “an easy-going yet highly imaginative teacher” with a profound understanding of the complexities of large classrooms. This passion for supporting teachers in handling large class sizes became the focus of her Master's and PhD research, where she explored the implementation of Multiple Intelligences Theory as a strategy to improve teaching outcomes in overcrowded classrooms. Her work has been widely recognized and presented at prestigious international conferences, including TESOL and IATEFL conventions.

As one EFL teacher remarked, “Leadership is not just about titles but about the impact of your presence and contributions.” Indeed, Dr. Mbayu Nana’s work has left an indelible mark on CAMELTA and the ELT community at large.

As the National Pedagogic Inspector in charge of English for Anglophones, she played a pivotal role in designing the 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒚-𝑩𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝑨𝒑𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒂𝒄𝒉 (𝑪𝑩𝑨) syllabuses for English and training teachers across Cameroon. Her dedication to improving teaching standards is matched only by her thirst for knowledge. Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is ingrained in her DNA.
