*URBAN AREAS AS “ISLANDS OF CLIMATES”*

An urban area has different climates based on the Landuse or place at a given time of the day hence urban areas have different microclimates *from one region, zone, surface or landuse to another*.

*Definition of Islands Climate*

*It refers to many different microclimates existing in a city due to different urban landuse*

Landuse within the urban areas are usually warmer while landuse at sub-urban corridors are usually colder due to fall temperature as distance from urban areas increases towards the suburbs.

Hence the countryside is having low temperature while urban areas are having high temperature.

Urban areas are described as islands of climates because of the following factors .

*TYPES OF RAINFALL 🌧⛅🌨🌩*

There are *3 types of Rainfall* depending on what caused the air to rise. These rainfall are :

1. Orographic or Relief rainfall

2. Convectional Rainfall

3. Frontal or Cyclonic rainfall

A. *OROGRAPHIC OR RELIEF RAINFALL*

*Definition*

This is a type of rainfall which occurs on the Windward slopes of highland areas as *Mountains, Plateau* especially those along the coast or waterbodies.

Orographic rainfall occurs when moisture bearing winds meets an obstacle relief feature or barrier as *Mountain, this causes the wind to rise, expand, cool, condense leading to the formation of cumulonimbus clouds, the clouds become dark and heavy leading to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms on the windward slope of the mountain (wet part)*.

The Leeward slope usually witness Low rainfall because it is characterized by the *sinking of dry NE trade wind causing dry conditions hence when the windward slope is experiencing driness rain*, the leeward slope is experiencing drones hence the Leeward slope is described as *Rain shadow*

The *wettest place or part in the world 🌎* such as *Debunscha (Cameroon), Chirrapunji (India)* are located at the windward slope of mountains recording *very high rainfall 🌨🌧🌩⛅ more than 10,000mm rainfall yearly* .
