Inhabitants of Foumbot in the Noun division of the West over the weekend witnessed a series violent scenes as protesters stormed the streets to express their dismay over exorbitant prices of cement and zinc.

All began last Saturday May 7 after a client acquired a bag of cement at the price of FCFA 7000 from a store in the town and requested an invoice which was denied him. This sparked an altercation between the two that caught the attention of the population.

Economic activities were paralyzed as stores and major shops were forced to close leading to general protests against price hikes of basic commodities. A bag of cement sells at FCFA 7000, FCFA 10 000 for a sheet of zinc, FCFA 45 000 a bag of fertilizer just to name a few. This situation led to the mobilisation of forces of law and order to contain the angry population.

Informed of the situation, the governor of the West region Awa FONKA AUGUSTINE descended to the town to restore normalcy.
