Sir, Charles O. Job

Nigerian-born. Switzerland-based. Globally recognized.
Meet Charles O. Job, the award-winning designer behind the iconic armchair SKETCH, now part of the permanent collections at the Vitra Design Museum and the Denver Art Museum, a rare honor for work that advances global design thinking.

With a philosophy rooted in sustainable simplicity, SKETCH is crafted from one repeated form, allowing flat-pack transport, easy assembly, and minimal waste.

Inspired by childhood ingenuity in Lagos, “Now it’s called upcycling. We must have been ahead of the curve!” Charles O. Job.

SKETCH embodies the very heart of design thinking:
- Empathy-driven creativity
- Problem-solving through iteration
- Sustainable innovation
- Simplicity with purpose

Job’s work proves that thoughtful design can bridge cultures, economies, and ecologies while still looking stunning.

At Ulevus School of Design (USOD), we believe innovation can and should be approached systematically. It’s not just for a few “creative geniuses”, it’s a structured, repeatable process that empowers anyone to solve complex problems with clarity, empathy, and impact.

Design Thinking equips students to:
✅ Turn vague ideas into real, market-ready solutions
✅ Create diverse, human-centered products and services
✅ Combine intuition with analytical thinking
✅ Focus on actual user needs, not assumptions
✅ Collaborate, prototype, test, and refine effectively

At USOD, this approach is embedded in every class, project, and mentorship.
One of our leading tutors, Kevin Mukuri, a Swedish-Cameroonian designer and co-founder of fashion label MAYZ is a clear example of this in practice.

Through moodboards, cultural narratives, and deep user empathy, he creates fashion that empowers and connects.
Kevin brings the same structured creativity into the classroom, mentoring the next generation of African designers to create with purpose, confidence, and process.

Ulevus School of Design is now accepting applications for its next cohort.

Inaugurated this weekend in Ouagadougou: the Thomas Sankara Mausoleum, designed by Kéré Architecture.

Honoring the legacy of Burkina Faso’s former president and his 12 companions, the mausoleum is both their final resting place and a space of remembrance, encounter, and hope for people across the African continent.

Built with laterite and locally sourced materials, it reflects Sankara’s enduring commitment to environmental responsibility and social justice.

A 34-meter dome shelters 13 tombs, each one illuminated by the sun at a different hour, tracing a path of remembrance across the day. Thirteen columns, and the voids between them, evoke the absence left in the lives of the families of Sankara and his companions.

This marks the first phase of the future Thomas Sankara Memorial Park: a place for reflection, learning, and collective dreaming, rooted in history, to be built for the people of Burkina Faso and beyond.
