On the scorching shores of Douala, 23 December 1886, four resolute missionaries from Basel disembarked into the unrelenting African sun: Gottlieb Muntz, Christian Dilger, Johannes Bizzer, and Friedrich Becher. Clad in determination and armed with Scripture, they carried the flame of the Gospel. Yet, scarcely four days later, tragedy struck. Becher succumbed to malaria on the 27th, his life extinguished like a candle in the wind. The fledgling mission mourned, but Dilger, undeterred, penned words of iron resolve to the Home Board: “It is the Lord who has introduced our band in such a way. We therefore can and will not withdraw.”

Seventy-one years of toil and triumph unfolded. Then, on 13 November 1957, at precisely 11:00 a.m. in the hallowed grounds of the Presbyterian Church in Ntafoang Bali, history pivoted. The Basel Mission relinquished its hold, and the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon emerged fully autonomous, a Cameroonian heartbeat in a Cameroonian body. The Very Reverend Abraham Ebong Ngole assumed the mantle of Pioneer Moderator, with Aaron Su as Synod Clerk, two titans entrusted to nurture the burgeoning flock.

From a modest 59,000 souls at independence, the church has swelled to a mighty 2.5 million worshippers, its branches stretching from the verdant hills of English-speaking regions to the bustling streets of Yaoundé and Douala, and even to distant congregations in the United Arab Emirates. A mustard seed, once fragile, has burgeoned into a vast forest.

Nor has the PCC confined its mission to pews alone. Through the Presbyterian Education Authority, it has erected schools that moulded minister s, physicians, and teachers. Via its Health Services, it has built hospitals where the afflicted find healing for body and soul. In times of war, refuge, and desert exile, congregations have risen, unyielding.

Today, 10 November 2025, marks 24,857 days, 597,768 hours of unbroken vigil since that sacred hour in Bali. The clarion call from 1957 endures: @68.
