CAMEROON BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY COMMENCEMENT: THREE BENEFITS OF A SEMINARY EDUCATION
Introduction
The Cameroon Baptist Theological Seminary in Ndu just graduated its 79th batch of students on May 5th, 2026. In an age where the importance of a seminary education is downplayed and even considered unnecessary by some, such an event presents one with an opportunity to highlight some of the reasons why every minister of the gospel should try to get a seminary education. To remind us of why the men and women who graduated last weekend chose to set aside three years for a Bachelor of Arts degree or three to six years for a Master of Arts degree from a seminary, here are three benefits of a seminary education.
Seminary Education Provides Deep Theological Knowledge for Life Savers
No serious person ever says that the time doctors spend in school is too long or unnecessary. Doctors’ mistakes can lead to death, so we prize their training. Cardiologists spend many years in school learning to treat the human heart because a little mistake when working on a human heart is potentially fatal. While their training is so highly esteemed, the same cannot be said for a seminary education. People who downplay or minimize the importance of a seminary education forget that ministers of the gospel take care of both the body and the soul. They need to know their subject matter which means that ministers of the gospel need to be grounded in theology. This simply means that they need to understand God and how he has revealed himself to us through his word and his work in Jesus Christ. Not understanding who God is is fatal because a person who does not understand who God is will worship a God of their own making, invite others to do the same, and both will end up in hell. Such a person is like Israel, who, after being delivered by God, because of their bad theology and the bad theology of Aaron, created a God who was not YHWH and called him YHWH. YHWH was greatly displeased, and most of those people perished (Exod. 32:1-5, 35). The people who represent the God of the Bible need to understand him the way he has revealed himself in his word and through Jesus Christ to point men and women to him for salvation. The seminary is one of the best places to gain a good understanding of our God because the people who have spent years studying theology and are ready to teach others what they know, are found in the seminaries.
Seminary Education Creates Skilled Bible Interpreters
The work of ministry ought to be done skillfully, faithfully, and with conviction (Ezra 7:20; 1 Tim. 3:2; 1 Tim. 4:11, 13; 2 Tim. 2:2). There are many who claim skill in Bible interpretation and teach with conviction. However, a careful scrutiny of their “skillful” Bible interpretation and teaching reveal a false confidence born from zeal without knowledge. The shallow, poorly articulated, theologically flawed nature of these teachings arise from the fact that the teachers lack the right Bible Interpretation skills. While the Holy Spirit is the best interpreter of God’s word, the Bible teaches in 2 Timothy 2:7 that we still ought to think careful over the content of scriptures using the right Bible Interpretation tools for the Holy Spirit to help us understand the text. The Bible therefore teaches what we could call, “Spirit-dependent-for-understanding thinking.” Many pulpits and ministry positions are occupied today by men and women who love the Lord and are zealous to put his fear in the hearts of men and women but they cannot do it because they lack the right skills. They end up having to uplift wealth, health, and the man of God to places they do not deserve not because of any maliciousness in them but because they do not know the God the Bible talks about since they cannot read it well. A seminary education will equip men and women to think critically over what is revealed in the word of God about God through multiple hours of instruction on Bible Interpretation skills and the Biblical Languages. The great reformer Martin Luther once said we will lose the gospel if we lose the languages. The best place to get a good basic training in the languages is a seminary. A seminary education equips a minister to preach and teach and do ministry skillfully, with conviction, and faithfully because of the right skills of interpretation it provides the seminarian during his or her seminary education.
Provides an Avenue for Establishing Lifelong Ministry Relationships
Ministry is daunting. Some of the things that would make a man or woman succeed in ministry, in addition to the things already mentioned above, are a good mentor and ministry partners. This is clearly exemplified in the ministry of Paul and the apostles. The apostles, the Lord Jesus' students who spent three years learning from him, continued to work together after he had ascended to heaven following his death for sins and his resurrection, which gives us hope in our resurrection. They reached out to one another and convened when necessary to discuss theology as revealed by the Jerusalem council in Acts 15. These men were from different parts of the Jewish world. However, their time together as students of the Lord Jesus resulted in a mutually beneficial ministry interdependence amongst them. One of the advantages of studying at a seminary is that you get to meet men and women who understand certain subjects better than you do. You meet men and women who get to know you and can pray for you and counsel you when you need it.
Conclusion
While the local church is the ideal ground for ministry formation, God has established the seminary in recent years as a necessary place for the formation of his ministers. The harvest is plentiful, and seminaries exist to make harvesters faster and in larger numbers than the local church could do. A good grasp of theology and Bible Interpretation skills for faithful, convictional, and skillful ministry happens at a seminary. The seminary is also ideal for a minister seeking lifelong ministry mentorship and partnerships.
LOVE COVERS WRONGS
Verse: Proverbs 10:12; 17:9
Take effort to promote love by letting it cover the wrongs of those you care about. This is not compromising your faith but standing true in love.

GOD'S LOVE IS SACRIFICIAL
Verse: 1 John 3:16
John begins this verse by stating how we know love; it is demonstrated by Christ laying down His life. When we talk about sacrificial love, we are referring to the kind of love that goes beyond surface-level affection. Loving one another must go beyond mere affectionate words but sacrificial action. The test of true love is the willingness to sacrifice one’s life for his brothers. Jesus demonstrated such love by laying down His life for the ones He loved. The sacrificial love of Christ distinguished His love from every other form of love that exists.

REMAINING IN GOD'S LOVE
Verse: John 15:9-10
Have you seen a child claiming to love the parents yet live contrary to the parents’ orders? If that child is abiding in the love of the parents, he should obey them. Let our abiding in Christ’s love be visible in how we love, obey, and joyfully serve Him.

MADE AlIVE BECAUSE OF GOD'S LOVE
Verse: Ephesians 2:4-5
Have you been made alive in Christ? Maybe you are in the church, yet still dead and separated from God. Perhaps the fallen nature still dominates your life. You can be made alive in Christ by God.
