What Causes Quarrels and Wars Among Believers?

James 3:1–4:2

James shows that conflict among believers does not usually begin with what happens around us, but with what is happening within us.

1. The misuse of the tongue (James 3:1–12)
2. Human wisdom in the church (James 3:13, 15)
3. Bitter envy (James 3:14, 16)
4. Selfish ambition (James 3:14; 4:2)
5. Desires at war within us (James 4:1)

The Antidote: Wisdom from Above (James 3:17)

James does not only identify the problem; he also points us to the solution. “The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy” (James 3:17).

Before we speak, compete, accuse, or fight, we should ask: “Am I acting according to earthly wisdom, or am I seeking the wisdom that comes from above?”

Dealing with Uncertainties

Numbers 14:9

“Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the LORD is with us; do not fear them.”

Uncertainty can make us afraid and tempt us to doubt God. When Israel faced uncertainty about entering the Promised Land, Joshua and Caleb reminded them how to respond. When the future is uncertain:

1. Do Not Rebel Against God
2. Do Not Be Afraid
3. Trust in God's Presence

THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP

Luke 9:23: “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”

Being transformed into the likeness of Christ comes at a cost. Jesus identifies that cost in this verse: self-denial, sacrifice, and daily obedience. To take up our cross means being willing to put Christ above our own desires, comfort, plans, and ambitions.

The word “daily” reminds us that discipleship is not a one-time decision. Every day, we are called to surrender ourselves to Christ and faithfully follow Him.

The cross is costly, but following Christ is worth the cost.

THE GOSPEL MAKES AND MATURES DISCIPLES

The gospel makes disciples by calling sinners to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ (Mark 1:15; Acts 2:38). But the gospel also matures disciples as they grow in the knowledge, character, and obedience of Christ. Paul says, “Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect [mature] in Christ Jesus” (Colossians 1:28).

The following quotes emphasize that the gospel makes and matures disciples:

"The gospel is not only the ABC of the Christian life, but the A to Z of the Christian life.” — Tim Keller

"A disciple of Jesus is someone who learns the gospel, relates in the gospel, and communicates the gospel.” — Jonathan K. Dodson

"Evangelism and discipleship are both gospel endeavors. The gospel integrates, not dichotomizes, evangelism and discipleship by announcing a grace that saves and sanctifies disciples.” — Jonathan K. Dodson

OCCUPY TILL HE COMES

Luke 19:13 (KJV): “And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.”

The command “occupy till I come” means that while Christians await the second coming of Jesus Christ, they are not supposed to be idle. They are supposed to faithfully use what Jesus has entrusted to them.

In the context of the church, Christians are called upon to be faithful to Christ’s mission until He returns, and the central task of that mission is to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19–20).

The church must not stay idle; it must make disciples.

The Cameroon Baptist Convention, through the Theological and Christian Education Department, has provided resources that can help churches guide Christians in their journey of following Jesus.

GOD'S SOVEREIGN RULE

Psalm 33:9-11

‎"‎For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples. The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations."

Our world is full of voices, opinions, and plans. Yet, above them all, God reigns. He is not moved by human schemes or shaken by circumstances. He speaks, and it happens. He decides, and it stands firm. His counsel is unchanging and His purposes last forever. We can ret in the truth that God is in control; yesterday, today and forever.

A LIFE OF INTEGRITY

The world may say, "Everyone does it," or "You have to compromise to succeed," God says Integrity matters.

The wise man in Proverbs 11:3-8 shows us the benefits of integrity as he contrast it with the outcomes of a crooked life. Through this, he is inviting us to pursue Integrity.
