Modernity's Bridge.
The artist project that I have been working on with Beatriz Maturana Cossio and the Museum Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna concerning public space in Santiago de Chile has concluded. It began as "Orrillas, Puentes y el Torrente" (2015-2017), transformed into "The Bridge as a Readymade" (2018-2019) and then was violently contorted by the urban insurrection into "Modernity's Bridge" (2019-2021). Its inclusion and publication in the Project Anywhere research program 2020 and the publication Anywhere IV 2021 are its documentation. Attached is our section from the publication as separated JPEGs. If anyone would like a copy of the whole publication I can send it as PDF. Interventions in Public Space. COVID and APRU
Beatriz Maturana and I are beginning the eighth semester of our course at the University of Chile next week. It began in second semester 2017 and is a transdisciplinary undergraduate course, taught in English. We have 21 students enrolled for the three hours per week over a 16 week semester. It involves history, theory and practice of interventions in public space in Chile and internationally. Art, architecture, urbanism and advertising. Also, students undertake a site analysis, develop an intervention proposal and implement this intervention with an evaluation of impact aligned with the intention. Due to COVID 19, the last two semesters have been a zoom classroom and the site visits, site analysis with derive and the interventions have all been virtual. The intervention site is the heritage listed, pedestrian bridge in the centre of Santiago - Puente Los Carros. It was closed in 2014 after structural damage was detected from the 2010 8.6 magnitude earthquake. We've learnt a lot post Chilean October Crisis and in COVID's new normality and the students have been great, embracing the course and the format. For 2021 were are the only course in the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of Chile, taught in English, that was accepted as part of the APRU online program. As the name suggests, Association of Pacific Rim Universities has member universities and students from East Asia, Asia Pacific, Australia, New Zealand and America (the continent). We are delighted to have our first APRU student from China in first semester 2021. The image below is from two design students Valentina and Javiera and their sound intervention proposal to link disconnected parts of the market area around Puente Los Carros. They use the idea of Marc Auge of the bridge being both a border (that, like language can be crossed while maintaining the difference of both sides) and the perfect artwork of nature transitioning into culture.
