Police will be taking up possible recommendations to improve the oversight of mountain treks, following a night search and rescue of a holidaying elderly couple. The alarm was raised shortly after 6pm on Saturday when an accommodator became concerned over the time taken for guests to return from a cross-island trek.

Local guide Bruce Goldsworthy helped alert Police Search and Rescue (SAR) and then assisted two teams with the task to locate the pair. A man in his 80s and his elderly wife were located on the Wigmore Waterfall side of the trek, soon after 7.30pm. The couple had lost their footing in the darkness and had slipped off the track into bush. Both had sustained minor abrasions.

The misadventure has prompted a wake-up call for some concerted action around advising and overseeing mountain treks. While there has been a lengthy absence of SAR incidents, the return of tourists has clearly opened the scope for emergency rescues. Police will be reviewing the measures in place with a view to recommending changes. Any measures to safeguard trekkers will require the broad input of stakeholders, in cooperation with the Police.

Celebrating 50 years of Women in Policing
A Message from Acting Commissioner Akatauira Matapo

We’re pleased to mark a special occasion on Monday the 29th of March this year, honouring the 50-year history of women serving in the Cook Islands Police.

As Acting Commissioner, it is my privilege to convey on behalf of the Police leadership and all the staff of the department, our recognition and deep appreciation for the contributions made by more than 100 women personnel over these past decades. Our performance and standing has been strengthened by their commitment, and our community more enriched by their dedication to service.

The recruitment of Jane Tuavera and Makiroa Luka in 1971 was the seed from which many have grown, and demonstrated a proven ability to match their male counterparts when given the chance. After all, policewomen are not relegated to support roles. They are team members, who can step up for the challenge of leadership.

The doors have opened wider for women in policing today and while the representation has improved over the years, we have not yet achieved parity in numbers compared to men in the Service. At present, about a quarter of our Frontline Police Officers (Sworn) are women, and just over 40% of our staff overall (including Non-Sworn) are female.

However, women are continuing to explore the police frontier and achieve a number of firsts, albeit gradually. Last year’s Mama Tuki Wright Recruit Wing held the highest number of females (5 out of 9). The first two women have enlisted as patrol boat crew in the Maritime Division, with one of those officers being the first female to receive tactical firearms’ training. Two female Detective Constables are producing fine results in criminal investigations, and Maritime has exciting career opportunities ahead in the coming year. The encouragement for more females to consider policing will continue, as will our efforts to promote careers in the range of roles and positions.

As Frontline Officers, our women, alongside the men, can be subject to a world of unpredictability - an uncertain environment where the risks can be high, hostile, and dangerous. Many have experienced such situations and thankfully, have remained true to their training and professional approach toward safety and security - for themselves and others.

Our women, naturally, do face different pressures. The role is not an easy one for anyone to endure and maintain, especially when catering for broader family needs. The demands are high, and often relentless. There is a side to this career that others don’t see or appreciate, and our women are often the ones who must bare the heavy burdens of two worlds – home and work. Support is absolutely necessary, especially from within our own homes.

And for all those, who have achieved so much over the years, individually as well as collectively under the banner of CIPS-WAN, your history of commitment is a proud record and a light for the many women yet to come.
