Forest School and outdoor activities, including bush craft skills for Kindergarten/Primary children It is about facilitating ‘safe’ risk taking.

Forest School is derived from Scandinavian philosophies of teaching in the outdoor environment. Forest School is an inspirational process - children achieve and develop confidence through hands-on learning. It is based upon early childhood principles of freedom in play, creativity, socialisation skills and emotional stability. An enriched and extended outdoor curriculum engages all children- able and special needs children. Gardner’s proposed theories of multiple intelligences are used to consider the value of Forest School in supporting the more able learner:

• Kinaesthetic‐ individuals who learn by doing
• Linguistic‐ individuals who learn through discussion, and enjoy written and spoken language
• Logical - individuals who are methodical and are often good at problem solving
• Interpersonal‐ individuals who relate well together and learn best through social interactions
• Intrapersonal‐ individuals who have a strong sense of self and understand their needs
• Musical‐ individuals learn through sound and music
• Visual/Spatial individuals who are often perceived as creative, these learners usually have a good sense of direction i.e. good map reading etc.
• Naturalistic‐ individuals who take an interest in the natural world around them.
