During the first week of the summer holidays, the ZHdK Sommeratelier 2026 welcomed young creatives to explore art and design through hands-on workshops, studio practice and inspiring conversations.

Sneaker as cultural artifact by Ilja Kager .arteducation

In his Master's thesis, .kager explores the sneaker at the intersection of art, design and fashion. By taking it apart, transforming it and placing it in new contexts, he shifts the sneaker from a functional object to a sculptural medium for reflection.

Inspired by the work of Martin Margiela and Alexandra Bircken, the project investigates deconstruction as both an artistic and analytical practice. Fragments, materials and traces become tools for revealing the cultural, social and material narratives embedded in everyday objects.

🍎 "Roll, roll, little apple on the silver plate."

Created by ZHdK students Anora Ismailova (directing .theater), Alice Shchutska (acting .theater ) and Makar Fabrika (), this performance brings together different artistic practices and personal perspectives.

Originally developed as a 30-minute work and presented at ZHdK Hochschultag in a special 7-minute version, it reflects on war without addressing it directly. Instead, it speaks through images, symbols and shared experience.

At its heart is the apple, a well-known symbol in East Slavic folklore. Rolling across a silver plate, it represents looking into the distance, wisdom and the magical revelation of the world.

What happens when a glance becomes a conversation?
«Between Glances» by Iris Prelorentzou (._p._ ) invited visitors to connect through specially designed telescopes, using nothing but the movement of their eyes.

The goal is to reach beyond language and to reimagine communication as an embodied experience that bridges cultural differences.

This project from the Bachelor Major Interaction Design was nominated for the ZHdK Förderpreis Design.

What does craftsmanship mean today – between tradition, innovation and social responsibility? In the Minor Craft Basic, students explored craft techniques, their histories and their future potential through both practical and theoretical means. Input, readings, excursions and experimental processes gave rise to independent projects that open up new perspectives. The results provide insight into different approaches to craftsmanship, as well as to materials, methods and processes.

Kann Social Media überhaupt ein Ort des Gemeinsinns sein – oder ist es längst zur Ähnlichkeitsmaschine geworden, die Empörung, Wettbewerb und Abgrenzung befeuert? Roland Meyer, Professor für Digitale Kulturen und Künste, und Judith Siegmund, Professorin für Philosophische Ästhetik, sprechen über das Spannungsfeld zwischen Ich und Wir, Empathie und Algorithmus, Unterschied und Zusammenhalt.

Die Podcastserie «Gemeinsinn» ist aus der gleichnamigen interdisziplinären Ringvorlesung entstanden.

Die Weiterentwicklung unter der Leitung von Jason Beechey ist gelungen. Dies bestätigen Spitzenplätze in Branchenrankings sowie die Erfolge der Absolvierenden. So haben alle Schüler:innen ein Stellenangebot erhalten, die diesen Sommer ihre Ausbildung abgeschlossen haben.

Nach schweren Missbrauchsvorwürfen 2022 stand die Ausbildungsstätte in der Kritik. Knapp drei Jahre später gilt sie nun als eine der besten im deutschsprachigen Raum.
