We had a wonderful trip to my home canton 😊
The Advanced Photography Study class enjoyed a fast and action driven sport photography event shooting the U-17 match of FC Schaffhausen against FC Luzern (0:5).

My “Summertime” submission, taken at Zürifäscht ☀️ 👓
My submission for the Summer Competition 2019. Shot in Zürich's Frau Gerolds Garten on 27th July, 2019
Stilfserjoch/Passo dello Stelvio on 24 July 2019. On a motor bike tour I also crossed Passo dello Stelvio. Looking back to the north I liked the duality of blue and green colors the most. On the other hand it's also alarming that you have temperatures of more than 20°C on a height of 2'700 meters above sea level.

Hallo everybody! I would need some advice from people who understand more of tehnology than i do 😊. I want to buy a laptop which I will use for basic activities like e-mails, internet surfing and so on, but I would also like to start learning foto processing in Lightroom. I really like the Mac Pro Retina due to the cool display. What would a suitable configuration for my level be? Many many thanks for your advices and have a beautiful day! ☀️
I know it was a Wildlife trip, but who could resist this shot?

Thanks Matt and Dagmar. Great trip with Olympus equipment to borrow.

Have you tried Lightroom's new AI-Denoise function? It's incredible! Took this shot at ISO 5000 and I was amazed. Looks more like ISO 1600 or 2000. 🤯

Leading Lines Photography

🙋‍♂️This month our members are working with leading lines to really level–up their compositions and draw the viewer's eye into their images. Don't miss the chance to participate! 📷

Join the fun at http://www.ViewfinderMastery.com!

Many people think that leading lines are mostly a landscape photography or architectural thing, but (as you'll see in the full lesson), Matt even used leading lines for a spontaneous portrait shoot that he did in downtown Zurich with a complete stranger! It's a lot of fun and you don't want to miss it!

This lesson helps you avoid some common beginners mistakes, so you can jump right into shooting and experiencing your own success – immediately! 🥳

TIME IS TICKING! This assignment ends on April 30th, so don't miss this chance to learn, practice and GET YOUR SHOTS CRITIQUED! 🏆

Emer says: I shot this image in February on a winter hike from Klosters village to Monbiel. As soon as I spotted this pretty barn, I knew immediately that I wanted to use it as an anchor to my photo of the beautiful valley. I tried a few different camera positions but in the end settled on an off-center angular view point that maximised the triangular shapes surrounding me. The barn seemed to draw me into the scene. Even though I was happy with my original color image, I decided to convert to black and white in Lightroom to emphasise the textures and contrast of the barn and sky.

Aricia says: "I love winter, and when we got the winter assignment I wanted to capture some of its beauty on a clear day close to home by the water in the afternoon light before sunset. I love getting soaked in and absorbed by nature's beautiful details, in this case the ice - where the bluish ice was meeting the warm colors of the sun low on the horizon."

Anne says: "I shot this one afternoon when I went into the hills behind Zurich to look for snow for the winter challenge. There was no snow, only these frost fringed leaves, but I loved spiny definition and detail brought out by the frost, and the cool almost silvery colour effect of the frost on the brown leaves. You just have to get out there - often there is inspiration to be found in the unexpected!

We couldn't agree more Anne! Great work! 🎉

Dijana says: "I was strolling on one of the prettiest streets in downtown St.Gallen looking for interesting compositions to photograph. On that cold, snowy, and pretty quiet Saturday night, I could barely see people walking by. Beautiful vintage street lanterns were around me and were exactly what I wanted to capture. However, I didn't want my picture to look like architectural photography. I was patiently waiting for the human element that could add life to this cinematic shot that looks almost like a movie set scene. The wait and cold hands totally paid off when this couple, sharing one umbrella walked into my frame. This exposure time was on the edge of what's consider a safe shutter speed for hand-holding!"

Emer says: "I accidentally stumbled upon this photo opportunity after taking a shortcut back to my hotel in Brigels, early in February. Passing the river I saw this small mass of ice gleaming in the sun and I was compelled to take out my camera. To emphasise the ice and separate it from the brown and yellow riverbed, I decided to take a long exposure photo. However I did not expose too long as I wanted to keep some of the texture of the water. The resulting colours in this image are muted but I think they evoke a sense of winter. I tested this image in black and white but concluded that the colour image was more successful in separating the super white icicle from the muted tones of the riverbed."

Dijana says: "Skiing is one of my favorite things to do on this planet and when I carry my camera with me it makes the perfect combination. I love action. I love when there’s a lot going on around me. It is natural for me to photograph sports, people, and the whole lifestyle around them. Not only the action, but when you are at an altitude of 3000m, the landscape can be stunning if the weather permits it."

Intentional Camera Mov't_Preview

This month our VFM members are practicing a really fun creative technique known as "intentional camera movement". Many of us have experimented with panning our camera while shooting moving subjects, but intentional camera movement is very different – and it's loads of FUN! 🥳

Rather than following a moving subject with your camera, the idea is to purposely shift the camera on one axis to capture some really creative interpretations of a static scene. 📸

In this month's lesson, Matt steers you past the common mistakes so that you can jump right in and start experiencing success immediately! 🙌

Aricia says: "I really enjoy the Nordic nature and climate - something I truly missed while living abroad for many years - especially in the wintertime 🙂
When we got the minimalist assignment I knew right away that I wanted to enjoy the freshly fallen snow, and the wind bursts picking up every now and then. To me this gives nature an even more serene and peaceful feel. This allows me to be even more present in the moment, and allows me to focus on capturing and transmitting the minimalism of nature.

Michael says: "During our holidays in Slovenia last June, we stayed two nights on the shores of lake Bohinj. This hidden gem is the perfect place to cool down, have a swim or to do some other water sports. We decided to do a little walk along the shores and found a perfect secluded place for the lunch break. While enjoying the view of the mountains and the perfect reflections, some kayaks came along and I couldn’t resist taking a picture. The camera was just a couple of centimeters above the lake surface and without my fold-out back screen, this picture would not have been possible. This is a perfect example of “the right place and right time”. I couldn’t have planned this shot, so the lesson is always have your gear ready!

Leah says: "Photographing the moon is not something I do often. I was on a night walk at the end of January, after we had been given the minimalist challenge with Viewfinder Mastery. I looked up and saw this beautiful clear sky with a super bright moon, and just one cloud cutting through the bottom of it. I phoned my husband and he jumped in the car to bring me my camera with telephoto lens and a tripod. Luckily I had my headlamp with me, so was able to set up the equipment to get a few shots before the scene changed and the cloud moved away. Since it was so dark when I captured the photo, I had to up the exposure and shadows quite a bit in Lightroom. I also took the contrast all the way down to get more details out of the surface of the moon. Then I simply played around with some filters until I achieved the colors and effects I wanted."

Bronwen says: "First of all I should just say that I love water! I love being in it, on it and photographing it. Fortunately I live 10 minutes from the lake and head down there a couple of times a week in the early morning to either swim or take pics and often both. On this particular January morning it was extremely foggy and to my delight there were some rowers on the water. At times the other side of the lake was barely visible and the rowers looked like they were almost floating in air! I decided to practice with my Sony 100-400 mm lens. I took a series of shots with the intention of catching the most energy filled moment, which I believe in rowing is at the beginning of the stroke, called the “catch” (when the rowers apply the propulsive force). To my mind, this was in contrast with the absolute serene surrounding atmosphere on the water that day. An eerie but very beautiful morning. What I love about the water is that it can take on such a different character depending on the weather. It wasn't until I got the photos on the computer and zoomed in that I saw almost every shot had a problem. As these weren't pro rowers there was always one rower out of synch or looking another way or otherwise a duck would be in shot. However, I singled out the one photograph which I felt caught this energy and encompassed the mood I experienced and which I am sure the rowers felt too. In black and white and with little editing it appears even more moody and minimalist, it's ethereal....almost."
