As part of our art and cultural experiences, we took ARTOURIANS to dig deeper into the “ MANIFESTA 12. The Planetary Garden. Cultivating Coexistence” biennial topics thanks to the Manifesta 12 Gardener. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The private tour in the Garden of Flows section explored topics of toxicity, plant life, and the culture of gardening in relation to the transnational commons. Artourians took a look at the city of Palermo and discussed the idea of the garden, exploring its capacity to compose life out of movement and migration. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀
Palazzo Butera has been part of the section Garden of Flows of The Planetary Garden. Cultivating Coexistence, and hosted works by Maria Thereza Alves, Melanie Bonajo, Fallen Fruit, Renato Leotta, Uriel Orlow, and Sergey Sapozhnikov.

Throughout history, the city of Palermo has been a laboratory for diversity and cross-pollination. Continuous migration – from the Ancient Greeks, the Arabs and the Normans to the recent arrival from Northern Africa, South East Asia and the Middle East – has constantly redefined the city and its people. Palermo’s streets, architecture, parks, cultural legacy and personal histories are the result of a long-lasting syncretism of cultures across the Mediterranean and beyond.

What is Manifesta?
Manifesta is the European Nomadic Biennial, held in a different host city every two years. It is a major international art event, attracting visitors from all over the world. Manifesta is the go-to place for discovering emerging artists, thought-provoking ideas, new artworks especially commissioned for the event, and creative experiences in dialogue with spectacular locations of each host city.

Palazzo Butera, a new laboratory for the city, is located on the old main street of the Kalsa district, where the historical and cultural stratifications of palermo are still visible today. Palazzo Butera has been recently acquired by Francesca Frua de Angeli and Massimo Valsecchi. An extraordinary restoration of this estate has been undertaken and personally financed by them. In 2019, Palazzo Butera will welcome the Francesca & Massimo Valsecchi art collection, currently on long-term loan to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford (UK).

Palermo may have been named Italy’s capital of culture for 2018 | Palermo Capitale della Cultura 2018 | and Manifesta 12 Host City | Manifesta Biennial | but its credentials as a cultural melting pot stretch back almost a millennium. Stones on display in the city’s Norman Palace remain in four languages: Latin, Greek, Arabic and Hebrew.
